Stealing Souls

Andrew Fildes

BA(Hons), Dip.Ed., M.Env. Sci., MVIT

Teacher (semi-retired) - Philosophy, History, Politics, Environmental Science, Photography.
I tried to retire a couple of years ago but I like teaching far too much.
Writer - advertising copy, web site copy, camera reviews, film and TV study guides, etc. I get paid for this. Also compulsive writer of poetry, think pieces and creative episodes. I don't get paid for this.

Photographer - commercial and stock - and test shooting for one of Australia's top photography magazines as part of my work as a freelance technical journalist. And when I get bored of portraits, shoes and shirts and footballs and stuff, it's good to get a model or two in and improve my studio skills with a bit of art or pin-up work.

I have a taste for mild distortion - in all things. Thus, many of my images involve people or buildings seen through a wide angle or fisheye lens. Some like this, others do not. I also like photographing people in the street, café, bar, restaurant, store, wherever. This used to be a noble calling, the recording of a way of life. Now it's more likely to get you regarded with deep suspicion. We have become more paranoid, less civilised, less sophisticated in recent years.

I've used my pBase site as a defacto website and have included pages of my own writings and poetry as well as photographs. After all, a personal website is mostly an exercise in ego and so why not go for broke? Think of it as a static blog perhaps. Dip in as and where it takes you. If you you feel the need to agree, argue, threaten or cajole me, please do but mail me direct. 'cos I always forget to check the messages on pages or below photographs.
As each page has to be 'keyed' with an image, not every image here is one of my photographs. Sometimes I just grabbed a copyright free thumbnail that was appropriate. No complaints please - not everything can be photographed easily and some cannot be shot at all.

I do not know whether my poetry in particular is worth the trouble - I enjoy writing it but suffer angst about whether it's worth the effort. Make your own mind up about that. As mental exercise it beats doing crosswords or Sudoku of course. If you feel the need to criticise it or anything else on this site, please do so thoughtfully and give reasons - I always welcome constructive criticism.

PhotoGeek Stuff

Canon 5D II and 20D - 24-70mm, 50mm, 85mm and 70-200mm f2.8. Also Sigma 12-24mm, Lensbaby Composer and sundry others. Olympus E-1, plus 14-54mm, 50mm f2 Macro. Olympus PEN EP-2 as a walk around kit with the Panasonic 20mm and 45-200mm, Olympus 9-18mm. Leica M9 and Ricoh GXR Mount with 35mm Summicron ASPH. Or the unique 35mm f3.5 Perar Super Triplet, the smallest Leica lens ever made (mine's #129). Plus heritage lenses via adapters - I love using old manual focus lenses on digital bodies. Canon rangefinder 35mm f2, 100mm f2 and Leica 50mm Summicron, an old Robot Schneider or or a Zeiss G 45mm Planar. . Double the length on an Oly body. I don't shoot much film anymore - mostly for old time sake with an M4 and those Leicas and Canon RF lenses..

I'm Chief Equipment Reviewer for top Australian magazine Digital photography and Design (sister publication to Australian Photography). That's why I started the 'A week with...' galleries.
Then I decided that my knees weren't up to traipsing through swamps to do landscapes any more - arthritis dammit. I wanted to reinvent myself as a studio photographer but I couldn't find a good space. So I made one. See the 'storeHouse studio' site link above and below.

I might know one or two ideas about the meaning of life,
probably don't know much about the meaning of photography
and love the complete bloody absurdity of both enterprises.
