The Santa Luzia riverbed channel.
One of the 3 rivers flowing down through Funchal and into the sea. After rain they turn into raging torrents, hence the deep channels they run through. However, on many occasions over the years these have not been deep enough to contain them, and much flooding and damage has happened, not least about 3 years ago. Work is currently taking place to enlarge them, and also to redevelop the seaside promenade area that was damaged by the debris washed down in the last floods.
