The statue of Joao Zarco was finally erected in 1934 in central Funchal’s main avenue. It was commissioned in 1918 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Zarco discovering Madeira. It took 10 years to complete, and in 1929 it won a gold medal at an international exhibition in Seville, Spain.
