Replanking the Deck of the "Star of India"
The old deck was about sixty years old and had developed leaks in several places causing those areas to rot. It had been sealed with cotton and pitch and many parts were still in good shape.
The new deck is made of Douglas Fir and is being sealed with a special Marine Caulk which will make the deck waterproof. It should last at least as long as the old deck.
The only way to replank the deck is by hand, due to the material and shape of the hull. The volunteers undertaking this task hope to be finished with their work by the end of the year.
The ship was built in 1863. This is probably her fourth deck.
