Kindle 3 - Screen contrast comparison and web browser pictures

Screen contrast photos of Kindle 3 vs Kindle 2, and some photos of web browsing with the WebKit-based Kindle-3 we browser as displayed on the new 'Pearl' e-Ink screen.

In the photo at the left, that's my Kindle 2 in its cover.  Next to it is the new, smaller Kindle 3 that comes in two models: (1) Free 3G mobile network wireless access as well as WiFi ($189) and (2) WiFi only. ($139).

Below are enlargeable photos from a hands-on look at the new Kindle-3's web-browser, with screens in normal and landscape mode (and with manual-rotation expanding the material into the wider screen mode).  Includes an example of web browser zoom-in and, after a click on "Article Mode," an example of how that feature ignores the side-column contents.  This subgallery is for use with the A Kindle World blog.

This isn't a regular "photo gallery," but if interested in the Kindle 3 (or the larger Kindle DX-Graphite), the photos may help.

Also, there's an earlier "Kindle 2" gallery with some of my wanderings involving the Kindle, including a Target store where I was able to see the Kindle2 and the Sony PRS-505 side by side, and a bit about a favorite Kindle jacket or cover which holds the Kindle and supports it upright for reading without needing to hold it.

Hi, I just got given a Kindle today. Mine is called the Kindle Wi-Fi. My screen is green. I don't like that aspect. I google searched that issue and am glad I found your page. I am upset about it.

It can depend on the lighting. Did you try switching the two units' placement?

And if it is darker and greener, call Kindle customer service at 866-321-8851 and let
them know of your dissatisfaction and that you are not keen on keeping it (30 day full
refund if not to your satisfaction) unless you can see if another unit is better than
yours which was not as good as the K2 of a friend of yours.

My DX Graphite sometimes looks white under some lighting and other times greenish,
but up close in dimmer light it almost seems to glow and is best of the ones I have for
low light.

My kindle 3 Screen looks green - a bit like an old style "b/w" lcd.

Is this normal?

When I looked at my friends Kindle 2 screen it looked white... so I am a bit disappointed.

Glad that helped. Pretty sure you'll like the Graphite. While it's all Gray, once you start reading it has best contrast, aided by the dark frame.

I forgot that you had a DX Graphite; that makes sense because part of my desire to get a graphite is my curiosity at having never owned a graphite Kindle before.

Thanks for reminding me about Amazon's 30 day return policy (it's too good to be true so I often forget!). I just ordered the graphite and if I decide that I miss the sunny look of the white Kindle, I'll just return it.

You appeased my fears :)

I have the DX Graphite already. The DX is my preferred Kindle for long-session
reading. I took it to Egypt/Jordan last Fall. But I carry small one everywhere when
here.

I was surprised to like it so much and should get pictures of that up soon too. That
one is stunning as far as the text clarity but some of it has to do with the larger screen
-- the default font size 3 is just a bit bigger. Incredibly crisp.

The K3 is very clear and a large improvement over the K2 but not as eye-popping as
the DX (which is too expensive). It is a beautiful package though. ALMOST too light!
Very responsive. Since I already had Graphite and I love my K2, including its sunnier
look, I chose white.

The Graphite framing will of course make the screen background look brighter.
Sometimes screen background seems to glow in dimmer light, but it is also, in fact, a
more intense lightness so I can read it by computer light only. I wondered if I'd have
that experience with a Graphite K3.

But the Graphite one, when I see it and am not reading on it, gives an impression of
total grayness, until you read on it. I just wanted the balance of the sunnier outer color.

And the little K3 is ultra readable. You can get both colors and return one for a full
refund within 30 days for any reason whatsoever. Amazon is very secure about the
Kindle. It's sort of addictive.
