My back porch / lanai while staying here.
This is in north western Thailand near the Burmese border. This was an area known for opium growers, Communist insurgents and escaping Karen hill tribe refugees from Myanmar/Burma. It was as peaceful as it looks when we visited in 1995, but only two weeks before we arrived, we read in Hong Kong's South China Morning Post that a Thai military officer was beheaded by a grenade tossed into his jeep in this area.
