Cyclone Tracy

Photographs from Cyclone Tracy – a category 5 cyclone (typhoon in Asia, hurricane in US) that destroyed about 70% of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, Australia, on Christmas Day 1974. The strength of the cyclone’s winds is disputed because many of the measuring instruments were damaged. Officially it was recorded as “greater than 217 kph”, but many believe the peak gusts could have been over 250 kph. More than 70 people were killed, hundreds injured, and 30,000 left homeless - most of whom were evacuated in the days after the cyclone. The damage bill came to AU$9 billion. Sorry I have only six photographs – I had only half a roll of black & white film in my camera at the time. My camera was one of my few possessions that survived the cyclone.
