Wow. I had no idea that was the genesis of the PAT name, Catherine. Thanks so much for sharing this bit of history with us all.

Jack Mandelbaum of MRF Construction Co, came up with the term "P.A.T." The story is that the term comes not from any specific type of home but from a trademark Mandelbaum came up with in NY for his "Perfect American Type" clothing. He just inserted "Arizona" because he moved here to get into the construction business and the "P.A.T." worked for his clothing line so he just transferred it to homes. Whether or not it really means anything is beyond me. The bio information comes from a 1956 article from the Arizona Daily Star. The quote from Mandelbaum "We were lucky with the trademark, so decided to carry it over into our building business. We had a natural here and called the homes we built "Perfect Arizona Type".

I was doing research on a home for someone that was built in the early 70's and the architect, David Swanson, also did PAT's (I didn't know what that meant til I talked to the architect that called me for help in researching the home). He was here in the 60's-70's, and did work in several subdivisions, including the one I was researching near the corner of Speedway and Pantano. Didn't look like much from the front, but inside was very cool with a window wall on the back of the house. The bathroom was straight out of the 60's - the old aqua-green tile and matching bathtub and sink. The owners were keeping all the original stuff, kind of neat.
