My first visit to your galleries though I've been in the PBase neighborhood for several years. From what I've seen I'll have to stop by on a more frequent basis to see what's been added. Impressive array of work. I work with relatively simple camera set-ups but I'm a little jealous of the ability to add focal length variety to the kit bag. Might join that group sometime in the future... Regards,

Billy,
I'm very enthused by your photos of incense smoke! They're artistic and captivating. Also, tomorrow the UPS guy is delivering 2 580 EZ's and a ST-2 remote to my home for my Canon 20D. I hope to experiment and try filming smoke like you have.

Any suggestions on technique? Black backgrounds, placement of flashes, bounce vs direct light? Thanks so much,

William,

could you tell me if the shots with the 50-500 in your airshow pictures are handheld, or with your monopod and gimble?

thanks,

I must say that your gallery is quite impressive. Those arial shots are not easy to take at all. I have the 10d & I am considering the 50-500 Sigma lens after seing your photos. I own the following lenses:
1) Canon EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM Zoom Lens (Model: 8001A002 )
2) Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DL Macro Super AF Lens
3) Sigma 28-80mm F/3.5-5.6 II MINI ZOOM MACRO LENS

The Canon lens was my first & I have taken some impressive pictures right out of the box. I have seen some good work with the Sigma 135-400 lens & so decided to take on the 70-300. But I must say that I am a little disappointed, I have not been getting the shots I expected. Yes, there are some good shots, but it seems like hit or miss sometimes. My biggest problem is that the images are not as sharp as I would like them to be, in fact at times they appear a little blurry. I have seen many pictures with the 10d & sigma & sometimes canon lens on pbase with this effect. I just recently sold my Nikon 5000 Coolpix in the hope of owning this super camera, which I spent over $2000 for. The last thing i wanted to see was blurry images! Is photography a much more factor dependent hobby than what I had expected it to be, am I being ripped off product wise, or am I still the novist that I started out to be over 6 months ago.

Any info will be much appreciated, I am going photo mad, please help.....

Ive had the 50-500 for about 7 months now, and find it to be a very good lens. I have a Canon 70-200 and the Sigma compares well. In fact when I go out shooting, unless I know Im shooting people, low light or limiting myself to 200mm, I'll take ther Sigma over the Canon. Built like a tank. The Sigma EX series lenes are definitely a cut above the consumer grade. A VERY heavy lens though, but sharp as a tack at 500mm, even at f6.3!
I got mine at Delta for about $750. BTW the Canon 28-70 is a magnificent lens!

i returned the sigma becuase i felt it was too soft at 2.8, although in every other respect it was an excellent lens. the Canon is sharper at 2.8, a little faster focussing, and yes had I the money I would have gotten the IS version. And it does make noise, thats normal.

Hi,
Very nice pictures! very good eye! your b&w pictures are awsome. I'm especially impressed by the ones taken with sigma 50-500...
I'm using a D30 for over 1 year, and I'm considering investing on new lenses (my current sigma 28-300 was low quality and is just dying... aperture stuck after 2 years only) I'm using usually a range from 50 to 400). I was first thinking about buying 2 lenses (eg. 28-70 + 100-400) but by looking at your pictures with the 50-500, I'm now confused...
What would you suggest? What about the build quality (I'm very relectant now to buy again Sigma) I'm also interrested in the answers you have (will) provided to Ken Mayo too.. difficult choice... I wouldn't spend much more than $1000-$1400 (I think the 50-500 is around $900), but would like to get quality products

William,
Your photos are beautiful! I was especially interested in your Sigma and Canon 70-200 shots because I recently purchased the D10 and am about to get the 70-200 lense. In your opinion do you feel Canon 70-200 is a better lense and worth paying an additional $400 to $500. I noticed you had both listed. I must say that the Sigma and Canon 70-200 photos on your site were equally excellent to my eyes.

Also, if your feel Canon is the better choice do you feel the IS makes enough of a differnce to justify an additional $500 over the non IS version. I was playing around with the IS unit today in a store and I honestly could not tell that much of a difference, if at all. And I kept hearing a "clicking" noise when IS was on. Are you familiar with that sound...is it normal? Any input would be most appreciated because I am about to purchase one of the lenses.
Regards,
Ken Mayo

sorry if I was not clear yes I WAS complimenting you. You have a keen eye for composition ( something im always working on myself) and always appreciate seeing excellence. I believe composition is the most challenging aspect of photography, and your work has that practiced, sharp eye in it. For me Tom composition works when the image as a whole is immediately clear, no ambiguity, my eyes go right from point to point around the image in a very comfortable predictable way, as if one were saying, of course, this the way it was SUPPOSED to look! Your photos are beautiful and ill look at them again to give you specific examples.
