I am looking for Dorothy Vogelman(maiden name) from Houston, Texas. She would have been born in the 1920s or 1930s in or around Houston. She lived in England for a while I actually have a photo of her in her twenties. I wondered if she might be related to you.
She was my mother's(Pam Singleton nee Harper) friend.
I enjoyed looking at the photos.
Regards Nicola Allen

Hello David! I am a Bit of a rock hound myself. Have really enjoyed all of the photos you have posted here on your account. I am a Colorado native and have visited many of the sites that you have posted here. I had just one question for you. My father and I have been prospecting around Taylor Mountain and have had a fairly hard time finding any quartz crystal diggings. I was wondering at what aproximate location are the crystals found. I have been to the Taylor gulch side via the road out of Garfield and the Chafee county road 224 on the Missouri gulch side and am unsure as to where I need to look. I usually am very good at sniffing out mineral deposits but the quartz deposits have seemed to allude me.

Glad to see you are still getting into the great outdoors and capturing it on film!

Great pics, and very encouraging to a new Colorado resident. Can you help me zero in on the Kremmling location? I visited Troublesome Creek, as outlined in several rockhounding guides, and didn't find a lot of wood. Much of it has to do with the fact that there was a good amount of snow on the ground. Anyway, I plan to go back but wanted to see if that was the best area. Thanks in advance!

Louis,

Salida is a great area to do some mineral collecting. The Calumet mine is certainly one of my favorite sites. If you can't find anything interesting there you are just not looking very hard. For a first visit I would suggest concentrating in the area around the road near the top of the hill. Smaller epidote crystals are almost everywhere and a little digging will surely get you some better specimens.

The other premier area near Salida is Mt. Antero. With the collecting area generally beginning above 12,500 ft to nearly 14,000 and either an approx 8 mile long steep hike from main access road or sometimes rough 4x4 road that may indeed have snow blocking the way above 11,000 it is not for either the unfit or uninitiated 4x4 driver, though just about any decent stock 4x4 should be able to make it. Antero can be much more stingy about giving up of its aquarmarines, smokies, or phenakites but someone nearly every year opens a nice pocket somewhere on the mountain. If you just want to make sure you find something I would suggest surface collecting over as wide as area of the mountain as you could cover.

As far as campgrounds go there are several on the main road in from the highway that goes out to Antero that look nice. Good luck and you never know I may see you out there as I am heading out that way from Texas on Saturday to spend a week collecting.

David,
I'm headed to the Salida area this weekend to find some mineral specimens. Can you recomend a good place to camp and dig. I plan on visiting the Calumet mine and Turret. We have a 4 wheel drive vechicle but I think the snow pack is still around 11,000 ft. Any suggestions? Thanks,
Louis
