Campanulaceae (Bellflower Family) - Lobelioids

The 116+ species (6 genera) of lobelioids are the largest radiation among all native hawaiian plants. The genera are clermontia, cyanea, delissea, brighamia, lobelia and trematolobelia. Lobelioids were a very important understory component in native hawaiian forests, but most species have been greatly reduced in number and distribution, or gone extinct entirely. Cyanea are usually one of the first native plants to disappear when a formerly pristine forest is disturbed. Some lobelioids have large bird-pollinated flowers, and their nectar and fruits were once a very important food source for native birds. The flowers and fruits of some other lobelioids are home to native flies.
