I am not a botanist, or even a gardener, so ID suggestions are welcome. Taxonomy, common names, etc are usually based on The Manual. Hawaiian names are based on the best source I could find - usually The Manual. However, the Hawaiian names aren't canonical or unique across the whole of the Hawaiian islands, and may be misapplied here due to differences in the location and the specific variety of the plants I photographed.
Initially I tried to get photos of all the different native plant species, and of interesting life stages, types, hybrids, flowers, fruits, etc. Some species and hybrids are difficult to differentiate. For instance, I have not yet tried very hard to collect all the species of common and highly variable plants like pilo, kolea, manono, 'alani, etc. Some interesting and distinctive plants like haiwale are difficult because numerous species and hybrids can all be found in the same location. I'd like to get complete sets of photos for each species at some point, including different sizes, flowers, fruits, hybrids, ecotypes, habitats, etc. I'm not certain when I'll find the time for all that. I also collect locations for the less common species with my GPS, and would like to post maps of population distributions eventually.
