Leeward Kohala

Photos from conservation work on upper leeward Kohala. Except for the summit region, the leeward side of Kohala was cleared for ranching and agriculture long ago. There is a small remnant of the native flora in the numerous gulches that dissect the leeward slope, but it is mostly covered with pasture grasses. There is an ambitious plan to reforest a strip of pasture between two gulches from Kohala Mountain Road up to the forest reserve. This will take advantage of the large transition from the dry leeward forests to the wet summit forests that has not existed for more than 100 years, and provide a wide diversity of habitat. Replanting has started. There is also feral pig, feral cattle and invasive weed removal in the summit forests.
