I've made a couple of trips to the Nature Conservancy's Waikamoi preserve to observe and survey Maui's remaining native forest birds. Most of my time in Waikamoi has been during busy bird surveys where I was unable to bring my telephoto lens and take the time to get photos of the birds, so most of these photos come from a single glorious day on the Waikamoi boardwalk. I have also visited the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project and the Olinda rare bird breeding center where they raise parrotbills, 'alala, nene and puaiohi. The three birds in this gallery only live on Maui, and only in very small numbers.
