There are two species of Hawaiian raspberry, both called 'akala: rubus hawaiensis and rubus macraei. There's a bit of a popular myth that 'akala don't have thorns, however the younger branches do have very thin fragile thorns, which tend to break off and get stuck in your clothes, and then painfully work their way in under your skin. When the 'akala are in bloom their purple flowers are popular with the nectar feeding bird species.
