Hi, i lived in Kampala from 1972-74 - I was only a teenager then but I remember we had to be careful what we wore-Amin had just brought in a rule that skirts had to be knee-length only (no mini's). We went swimming at the Apollo pool and afterwards having a burger. My sister (Laura) and I went to an international school (formerly an american school), but as their student numbers were reducing, they let us in too (Australian!). Forget the name of it but it was opposite tennis courts/park. I remember Mrs Bassadef, great teacher, and Mr Greeley for making us do American history! My father was a lecturer (accounting/law) at Makerere university which he loved. We lived in Nakasero in a house made of concrete that was always lovely and cool inside. I remember Uganda fondly, as very friendly people, a beautiful country, with lots of fresh food for everyone. Mum said no one would starve here as they can grow anything. We lived in Bugalobe Hill and then Impala Ave near the old airstrip. Remember Silver Springs swimming pool where I earned my gold ASA swimming badge, and weekends At Entebbe pool. Wow, glad I stumbled on this blog about Uganda. My name is Michael Quinn and my brother Mark and I attended Nakasaro Primary when we lived in Kampala between 1961-1963. I was in 5th grade at the time and he was in either 3rd or 4th. I was in Livingston House and he was in Speck House. My mother had gone to Uganda as a teacher with an outreach group associated with Columbia University here in the States. The organization was Teachers for East Africa (TEA) and she was assigned to teach business classes at Kampala Technical Institute just outside Kampala. A couple friends of ours were also attending Nakasaro Primary, David Beckwith and Michael Conway both of whose parents were also teachers with TEA. I knew Jimmy Kabuleta as a friend and as I recall he was a great kid. There was also a girl that I met and had a crush on. Her name was Veronica Wilkinson..wonder what ever happened to her. Her father was involved in some way with the British Embassy/Consulate as I recall. What a beautiful time that was. Kampala was so cool. We used to have tea at the Victoria Hotel and shop for curios right across the street in the middle of the round-a-bout traffic island. As Americans we were somewhat of an oddity at that time in Kampala and as wise guy kids we relished the notoriety. As I recall, the Headmaster of Nakasaro at the time was a fellow by the name of Bartlett and Mr. Lacy was the Asst. Headmaster. I thought that Mr. Little was the music teacher in those days. He was a shorter man with a goatee and we did not care for him very much. I can remember the before school assemblys where the days messages, group prayer and British National Anthem were sung. We all wore school uniforms, of course, and this was foreign to the American kids since we never had worn uniforms before. We did however enjoy shaping the uniform hats into cowboy style hats just to annoy the school administration. What a great time of life this was.

Thanks for these. I was born in Uganda in 1965 (Mulago Hospital) and lived there until we had to leave in 1973. Also at Nakasero and have many fond childhood memories. I learned to swim in the pool at what was then the Apollo but is now the Sheraton. I remember secretly sneaking into a tunnel that took you under the island in the middle. You could look up through the glass floor and see people above. Also remember the Speke and the National Theatre. As children we'd climb up the concrete "island" and into the conical plant pot you can see on the photo. As a seven year old it seemed enormous but looks tiny now! Fond memories. Discovered these excellent photographs of modern Kampala while browsing through links to some of my old schools (we moved around a lot when I was a child). Your site seems to have been rather hijacked by comments from old boys and girls from Nakasero Primary school, and I can only apologize for adding to the list. I was at Nakasero for only a year between 1959-1960. I have fond memories of my time there, firstly in Mr Moore's class for a term before moving on to join Mr Hope for the following year. I also remember Miss Milne (whose wedding I attended in Aberdeen while on leave, when she married a colleague of my father at the then Uganda Credit and Savings Bank). Also Miss Pckering, who terrified everyone at Nakasero but became my favourite teacher when she moved to become Headmistress of Fairways School in Mbale at the same time as I moved there. She once told me she had no idea why she inspired so much fear into Nakasero pupils! I remember Mr Lacey as Deputy Headmaster -- he really was scary. Unfortunately, I don't remember the Headmaster's name. He was a genial big burly man, accompanied everywhere in the school by two large dogs. Ridgeback, Rottweiler types, as I remember, but quite friendly. The music teacher was Mrs Elizabeth Salisbury, who had a weekly music programme on the radio. I think I was in Livingstone house, but it may have been Speke or Portal. After some schooling in the UK, I returned to Mbale, where I attended Mbale Senior Secondary School, I think in 1964. I really enjoyed my time there. It was still mainly Asian pupils, with a smattering of Africans -- and me, the only white face in the crowd. I liked all my male teachers and Mrs De Souza, who taught English, but does anyone here remember the terrifying Miss Sulu and Mrs Brown? I also spent a few months at Kololo Senior Secondary School in 1965, but don't remember much about it -- I was desperately trying to study a different syllabus from the rest of my class, for the Overseas School Certificate. I moved from Mbale too close to the exam to catch up with my Kampala classmates. In Kampala we lived in both Lower and Upper Kololo Terraces, one house not far from Lugogo stadium. Some classmates I remember from Nakasero: Barbara Nasembeni, Joyce Cavalliero, Janice?, Frances Watts, Jill or Ginny? (who was my best friend and called me "Sandybags"; I'm ashamed I can't recall her name). My thanks for bringing back happy memories of an African childhood. Sandra Rchards.

To Peter Johnson - my mother worked both at National & Grindleys in the late 1950s and then in Drapers from early 1960s but I guess your father may have left his GM post by then from the Store. Drapers was the finest department store in Kampala. As a child I recall being fascinated by the elevator as I had never seen one. Those halcyon days .... aaah! Hi my name is Peter Johnson, I lived in Kampala during the early to late 1950's. My Father was general manager of Drapers Stores (1943) Pty Ltd. I remember the Queen Mother comming Kampala, buildings were painted along the main street, bunting hung and flags flew. I attended the 'European Primary School', which was then renamed to 'Nakasero Primary'. Some of my teachers were a Mr Jerry Glossom (?) Mrs Sainsbury, Mr Lacey was my sister Catherine's teacher. My other sister Sybil joined the 'National & Grindleys Bank. We lived on Nakasero hill, just down the road from the Fort. There & at the entrance to the fort were barrels full of spent cartrigaes which my friend & I would help ourselves too. One of my friend's father was in the police at that time in Kenya, & I can recall seeing home made guns that the Mau Mau had made from rubber pipes, nails, and a wooden hand carved butts. These he had brought back home. I joined the Cub Scouts (6th Mengo), and then joined the Scout troop. Went to Crusaders, and Mr Warboyes played on a foot opperated organ. I remember weekends spent swimming at Silver Springs swimming pool, Entebbe, swimming in the lake, trips to the Murchasion Falls & the Queen Elizabeth National park. These we happy and care free days, and how I miss them.

Have just found this site and am transported back 44 years, lived in Kampala with my parents Bill and Eunice Leighton 1967/1968 when I was married at All Saints Church Kampala and came to live in Uk, lived in Nairobi before this. I had a hairdressing salon on Jinja road, Salon Chic, Mum and brother Barrett now in SA. My children and now grandchildren still use many Swahili words and love stories of me growing up in East Africa. Remember shopping in Drapers, miss the sunshine, thanks for photos and memories.

It was nice to see photos of Kampala. I lived in Kampala from 1959 to 1969. I started my schooling at Shimoni, then at Nakivubo ( my dad was a teacher in this school ) I did my O levels at Old Kampala Secondry, then moved to UK to continue my studies. I revisted Uganda in 2006, but never found it the same. Our house in Old Kampala still stands. I became very emotional when I saw our house, not too far from the famous Aga Khan mosque in old Kampala. I have lived in UK since 1969 and still miss Uganda very much. I got married and my wife came to UK in 1967 from Nairobi, Kenya. I would love to hear from anyone who knows me and would like to share our stories. Nick_S.....Hey Nick I remember sleeping on the balconey at your Mum's flat in Kampala. My father was with the Standard Bank as it was in those days. Never forget spending our mornings at the speke Hotel and then afternoons at the Club swimming pool, occasionaly went to the Apollo Hotel pool. Anyone remember the Rugby club? Crazy parties there on Saturday nights after a match. Great photos and great to find such a site.I was morn at Mulago Hospital in 1962 and went to Nakesero primary 67-69.My dad was a surgeon and taught at Makerere Uni.We remember the Buses and Stanfields and I remember Martin Aliker whose dad was a dentist.I was in Stanley House.I remember getting hit with the plimsoll but only now you mob have reminded me ! I remember playing British Bulldog at school.We lived in Garden Hill Rd in Makerere and swam at the pool lots.I even used a Bronze medallion from Uganda to score a job as lifeguard whils I was studying at Uni.I live in Adelaide in Australia now and have 3 kids.I miss Uganda.David Shepherd.Email olddrdave@hotmail.com

I too was born in Kampala but we left when I was only 18months old so I have no memories of these idyllic times that my mum and brothers and sisters talk about. Hi, I am Barbara Mayanja, and I joined Aga Khan Primary from Aga Khan Nursery in 1966. I remember my older sisters taking about Mr. Dixsit. But I found Mr. Jinnah, Mr. Hinchcliff, Mrs. Mascarenas, Mrs. Devji , Mr. Ramji , and Ms Lutwama (one of the few African teachers) at the school. I have a photo of P5E taken in 1969 and my classmates where Bilkish Sundrani (father worked with the sports fraternity), Shahnaz Huddah (Stayed near the school?), Shahnaz Alibali (Alibahi’s Garage), Nashrine Jaffer (Jeffries Ice Cream and Park Hotel), Shyrose (?), Umeshafiq Bandali Jaffer, Nimet (Jaffer?), Marion Kabali-Kaggwa, and Mr. Jinnah and Mr. Ramji’s daughters. Then among the boys was Fred Walter, a boy whose family had a large furniture shop on Kampala Road and he stayed in a house opposite Jamat Khana, ( grey Peugeot pickup used to drop and pick him and other family members from school),a boy called Najib, and another boy whose family name was Bawa Singh. Then another boy was born in Bugerere and he was fluent in Luganda. Also I remember a Zulfikar, and Mark Hartman (had a sister called Sarah and a brother called Lee),who came while in P6. Anybody still there, I would love to hear from you.

Hi - I lived in Entebbe from 1957 - 1964 but my Dad Michael Davies stayed on to run the civil service college in Kampala until he had to leave in a hurry in about 1973 leaving everything behind due to a serious threat from Amin. I would love to go back there one day although I'm sure I wouldn't recognise much.

Its great to hear those names ring in your ears! I was at Nakasero from 1963 and I would love to meet some of my teachers again. Mr. Short, Mr. Lacey ................ What a reunion that would be. Nakasero Primary is no longer the same since and maybe we could do something about it? Hi, I an a R.C from Goa ,India and was born in Mbarara in 1961 n went to Norman Godinho School in Kampala . Was studying in Ps 6 when had to leave for Goa, India in Sept 1972.I was 11 then.and it broke my heart .I'm 50 now and believe me or not I still have beautiful memories of that place. I never let them go.I recall them regularly afraid that I may forget this treasure.I still speak Swahili though am almost forgetting some words. Also know to speak "ch" language which i picked from my Gujrati neighbours .I have forgotten Arabic and Gujarati. I still am in touch with my classmate from K.G Marian D'souza who is in Canada. I have a special bond with AFRICA and will always be connected to may birth country.I love you UGANDA "mimi na penda veve."

Hi All!What a Wonderful site! I grew up in Kampala where I lived from 1951 till 1958.I studied at The European Primary School (presumably the Nakasero Primary!) and left Uganda in Dec'58 for Secondary School education in India at La Martiniere College, Lucknow. I joined the Indian Airforce as a fighter pilot thereafter and never could return to Uganda! but how I long to go there!! I do remember Mr Bartlett and Mr Lacey and how as a Prefect ,I was demoted for some misdeamour,but was subsequently re-instated for good behaviour!! I have wonderful memories as a Boy Scout and the camps we would go to and collecting tadpoles from the stream that ran thru Kitante valley.We first lived on Kololo hill then Makarere Hill and I vividly remember Makarere College and the Rubaga cathedral! I still live in Mumbai and one day as MacArthur said "I shall return!"-Kampala I Love U!!

Hello All, My name is Nur-Begum Karim and I am from Kampala too. I left in 1966 to move to London, England. My late parents were Hassan and Gulshan Karim. My father was the Secretary of the Aga Khan Education Board, Kampala, and served under various Administrators being Jimmy Verjee, Ameer Ishani and P.K. Pirani. My late mother taught at the Aga Khan Primary School from 1954 to 1960. I have lived in London UK ever since but cherish the memories I have of Kampala and my idyllic childhood there. I attended both the Aga Khan Nursery and Primary Schools until 1966. I recall Mr Jinnah (the AKPS Caretaker) and his family, Mr Sharp was the Headmaster (anyone know whatever happened to him or where his family now live ?), my teachers were Mrs Ruby Pereira, Miss Malek I.V. Jamal and others whose names I cannot recall. My AKPS friends with whom I am still in touch are Umeeda Umedaly (her mother taught at AKNS and Nakasero school) and Zabina Motani (now Mrs Dossa). Others whom I am also in contact with are: Lorraine Pereira (Mrs Pereira's youngest) and Jameela Siddiqi (younger daughter to Mr Siddiqi who taught English Literature at AKPS). My family and I lived in the Teachers Quarters (ie: the three apartment blocks) which were opposite the Aga Khan Primary and Secondary Schools with the Nursery and Aga Khan Boys Hostel on either side. Would love to make contact with anyone whoh remembers me. I have been back twice in the last 5 years and visited the school - very emotional. Wonderful childhood memories - how lucky we were. Found an old autograph book the other day with Mr Lacey's autograph!!! Enid Swift Mr Fenwick Mr Fullalove Mr Cheeney Mr Griffith - some I can't read!!! Puils I remember include - Rosalind Eaton who I am still in touch with - Cathy Holmes who I lost touch with years back - had a fleeting contact with Lindka Cierach who we used to live next to in Mabua Road - Dad worked as a dental technician at Nakasero and Mum worked for some time at the book shop in Makerere. I lived in Kampala from 1965 to 1968 and taught at Kitante boys school and then at Old Kamapla Senior Sec, years 1 & 2. I am currently scanning my old slides onto my computer, so am immersed in images of Uganda, and it is snowing outside here in Cardiff. I was a member of KATs and was glad to see the National Theatre still standing. I read all the comments and was moved by those who were forcibly expelled, they gave the UK a great economic boost eventually. It's taken me years to look at these slides as I just think of the horrors that the madman caused. I'm impreesed by the survivors' courage.

I happened to come onto this site by accident> I live in Vancouver BC Canada now with my two children and husband. I have never been back and this has brought back so many memories. I remember Miss Swift, Mrs Stephenson, Mrs Smith her daughter Barbara Smith Cathy Lord Mary saldhana YNI Chan Ying they owned the Canton Restaurant. I remember the lovely birthday parties we got invited to and the pool at Apollo Hotel now called the Sheraton. My mother was a seamstress and am sure sewed may of your uniforms and party dresses. I was born in Kampala in Mengo Hospital in 1957, went to school in Nakasero until I was seven. Went back in November 2005 and had a wonderful exciting visit. I was able to visit the people who were living in the house we lived in on Makinnon Road. My Dad Robert Holmes was an engineer with the Water Development Department, my sister Catherine and brothers Declan and John went to Nakasero too, I have two younger sisters who were babies when we left. Hello, thanks for posting these photos online. I only attended Sunday School at Nakasero Primary (crusader class)1968-69. We rode with Quintin Carrs family every now and then after Sunday school. My brother James Oda (Kololo Senior Secondary School, Sister Margaret Oyim, Later Old Kampala Senior and myself later Kololo High School. Although I live in Kenya presently, I have not gone back to Uganda since 1978, seeing the picture of Christ the King church just brought tears to my eyes. I am American. I do remember those tumultous days of living in Uganda under Idi Amin's rule, never should this allowed to happen again. Uganda remains dear in my heart.

I remember our headmaster was called Mr Shariff, a few teachers names were Mr shantilal Patel, Mr Jani, Mr Rajnikant Patel, Mr Desai, Mr Kapoor, Mrs Jagpal(very strict maths teacher!!), Mrs Mwanga etc. I have just recognised a few names from the list and will be in touch with them. I studied in Mount St Mary's Namagunga where I was also headgirl in 1970 before I went to Makerere University where I studied English and French. After 1972 I lost track of many classmates and dear friends of Asian origin including Bella, Miranda, Yasmin, Jesse who I briefly met in Mombasa a few years later, Lilian, the Mathematician and artist, Ingrid, and many many others especially my classmates in the first year French class at Makerere. I would also love to make contact with Dr. Patel (when I met him in 1972 he was a medical student in Nigeria) I met him at Ibadan University where I had gone for a WUS conference in August 1972. When I was a student at Makerere University (1971-1974) I worked as a part-time reporter for Uganda Argus. It seems you were there at the same time but we may not have crossed paths. The editor was "Mr. Woods" and we had a British Sub-editor whose name I forget. I usually stayed up in the reporters' room and hardly went down to Administration. Some of the reporters were Joshua Brave, Rebecca, Chris, Betty etc. and photographers such as the late Palmer. I reported some amazing live events, for example one Saturday at the Police College near Kibuli when Idi Amin was supposed to preside over graduation but started by announcing the banning of mini skirts, which sort of threw the city in Chaos as some unscrupulous individuals started harassing women who were in dresses that day. For me the graduation became insignificant. (With Joshua Brave)I also reported the proceedings of the East African Parliament I think in 1972, and I wront numerous feature articles. I now live in Canada. I, too, would love to know where all the people at. I also wish there were microfilms where we could access the articles we wrote online. Immy Wamimbi

good to see the photos.. was at Nakasero Primary 1955-60. happy times..lived in Dundas rd..then hated being sent to England to boarding school..parents had divorced, and then dad remarried: to (Bagandan) Leya, who was related to the Kabaka. All Leya's relatives were murdered, first under Obote then Amin..Dad was tortured in Nakasero fort by Amin's henchmen, not far from our old house in Nakasero Rd.but he continued to live out there till he died in 1981.very traumatic times..had shut down the memories, so it was good to see lovely old Kampala, looking beautiful and peaceful again. many thanks!

Born Nakasero Hospital 1948. Went to Nakasero Primary 1955-60 before that long train journey to Nairobi and St Mary's school. Thank you very much for the photos. I was born in kampala and lived there till 1972. I went there in 2005 and took many photos and video on my cam. My father worked in Standard Bank and my mother at the Development house. I studied in Shimoni Primary school. Shimoni school is now demolished, but everything seems to be there......only time has changed. Namugongo visit was nostalgic as Pope Paul VI visited Kampala in 1969, and we went for mass. My childhood experience especially at Universal house where all Indians lived there fantastic, where we used to have kite competition with the neighbouring buildings. We used to coat the thread with a paste with glass pieces so as to bring down kites from the neighbouring buildings. It was a nice competition. LAter on we lived in, now, the JUMBO house, which was opposite the "Fresh food" market, now, Nandoo's restaurant. We are Mangaloreans, who went back to India and are now in the Gulf and USA. My family lived in Kampala for 7 years until 1966. I went to Nakesero Primary. It was very strict. I remember one of the teachers used to hit us on the thighs if we got spellings wrong. My spelling improved very quickly! My parents worked for Makerere University. I remember reciting times tables daily and learning to read in the school. Very beautiful country. My name was Jane Arey . We lived in Kampala from 1970 to Christmas 1972. I went to Kitanti Primary School but lived on Namirembi Hill near the Anglican Cathedral. My father was a Doctor at Mulago Hospital. I learnt to swim in the pool at the Grand Hotel and Makerere University with Mr Smith but have many fond memories of afternoon swimming at the Apollo. My parents were active in KATS and Theatre Group especially the pantomimes, the Merry Widow and the Boy Friend all performed at the National Theatre. The photos have brought back many happy memories for both myself and my Dad and it is wonderful to read everyones posts and see that others are still like us touched by a place and its people after so many years of not being there.

Hi Brian I was at Nakasero primary school fromn1il 1962. Started in the nursery and progressed through the infants to the primary school. Sat the K.P.E and passed,was really looking forward to going to boarding school in Kenya when my father announced we would be returning to the UK. Leaving Kampala via the railway station in December 1962 , i made a promise to myself and Kampala that I would return one day. Hopefully I will be returning with my two sons who have been raised on what a beautiful country Uganda is and what a wonderful childhood I enjoyed there. Would love to hear from any old school friends or teachers who might remember me. My name then was Anna Batham, my father worked in the tax office and my mother worked for the BBC. Others I recall - Michael Lord (related to Cathy mentioned below?), Steve Jones, Michael Truscott, Cathy Jones, Mary Saldhana, Bruce McDowell (I lost touch after I got married in the 80s), Imelda McCourt,... As with others, very fond memories of that time and place. (Even if I do recall the alternative use of a tacky from personal experience!

Re. Nakasero Primary School. I was in Kampala from 1964 - 1968, and went to this school. I think I remember Miss Hope, and I certainly remember Mr. Lacey - we called him Mr. Tacky - after the plimsolls that we used to wear, and were used for alternative purposes (I believe). I returned to the UK to a place called Cottingham in East Yorkshire. Imagine my surprise when we say Mr. Lacey walking down the street. He had moved to the UK sometime after us, and now lived in a small village nearby. What a small world! I can still remember some of the words to the Christmas play that I was in. I was King Herod's Herald. I've been messing with Google maps to remind myself about what I did and where. Oh what memories of Uganda! I was a Canadian Teacher at Masaka SS School from August 1967-December 1972 initially, then the school was amalgamated with the AgaKhan SS School.I taught Science. I do not think a day passes without thoughts of Uganada and my cherished visions and experiences.I am still in touch with a few former teachers at the school via e-mail,namely from Denmark,Scotland,UK,Norway,and Canada.I lived on Bwala Hill and would love to try and connect with a couple of former students who lived in my quarters, namely Josam Kabasheki and John Mwetessi,who I understand bacame teachers in and around Mbarara Primary Schools.John was from Kigesi.I sincerely hope those who had to leave Uganda during the reign of terror under Idi Amin have made a successful new life wherever you are.John Halani, who owned a grocer and meat shop in Masaka was nominated as one of Canadas top 25 immigrants. Great pictures - looks like there are a lot of ex-pupils from Nakasero Primary School - I was there from 1960-1966 and have very fond memories of the school, but do remember it being very strict indeed - does anyone remember the formidable Mr. Lacey? I went to Nakasero Primary School from 1966 until 1970 - then was taught at home on Kyambogo Hill for 2 years. Left in November 1972 - the saddest day of my life. I have never been able to feel at home in the UK, people here worry about such trivial things. Am hoping to visit Uganda later this year with my children - then maybe one day.....

Hello everyone, I had no idea so many of us went to Nakasero Primary and still remember it all!. I went there approx 1964-66 as I then was sent to Britain to Boparding school at the old age of 7years. I'm not sure of peoples names, I remember what they looked like and the strict lady teacher with blonde hair whop always got my name wrong. I'm in Britain now. Was Mr Cheemo there when I was? was he the slim one who smiled and was kind to us confused pupils?.

Great photos. Krazy Kampala has changed a lot. Lived in Uganda in the late '90s, returned in 2001 and again in 2008. Things have improved or modernized much but the air quality and traffic congestion are reducing its attraction. Hopefully the political leaders can address these issues before Kampala becomes unattractive.

I must say that i echo the comments of Bipin Joshi. I have been living in the UK now for some 35 years, having left Uganda in 1972. I attended East Kololo primary School and lived on Bukoto Street in Kololo. I ache over memories of the school and over Kampala as a whole. It has been wonderful to note like sentiments expressed here. It amazes me how many are out there who have been so profoundly touched by their upbringing in Uganda. Often is the case that i think back on what was a relatively a short but infinitely significant part of my life. At times when overwhelmed by the stressful nature of our current existence it is not uncommon for me to reflect on those far off sunny days in Kampala. I would love to hear from those from East Kololo Primary School given that no matter how much i research on the net i still cannot trace any photos of the school.

I was born in Uganda in 1952 at Nasambya Hospital. I left Uganda in 1967. During my childhood in Uganda I spent first few years approximately 5 years in Bombo. Than we came to Uganda. Our house was located on William Street near Rahim House. I went to Shimoni Primary School and Kololo Senior Secondary School. I finished my S.S. I and S.S. II at Kololo Senior Secondary School before I migrated out of Uganda. The pictures presented here are excellent and hope there pictures for Shimoni Primary School and Kololo Senior Secondary School. I enjoyed the pictures and some of them took back to my childhood memory. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful pictures.sG

I haven't been back since we left in 1967 and don't remember anything of it, however my parents made several cine films of it so I can 'revisit' those times. I lived in Uganda for 2 years 1970 to 1972. Although we left when I was 10 years old, I have fantastic memories of an idyllic 2 years. I went to Nakasero school with my brother Timothy. Mr Matovu was my fantastic maths teacher. We lived on Mboya Hill, my dad worked for East African Post and Telephones and my mum at Pinetree nursery school. We used to swim at entebbe club most weekends while dad played golf. memories of buying huge bananas on the way home along the Entebbe Rd.So many wonderful memories but so sad when I returned in 2002 for a holiday. nakasero school was very different and my treasured memories were slightly dented.Uganda was truly the Pearl of Africa and started me on a life of travel, I am now in dubai. I would love to hear from anybody who was at nakasero at that time.

The pearl of Africa in our hearts. Mom was born at Nakasero Hospital in 1933 before it became a TV Station. Dad taught International Law and Taxation at Uganda College of Commerce. We lived at Bukoto Estates until 1969 (behind the police station) at the end of Kira Road, and walked to Kololo High School. Three generations of the Chitnavis family contributed to the development of Uganda and East Africa in peace and harmony. Many friends and family now spread all over the world. Uganda gave us some of the best memories of our lives.

I lived at Makere during the early 1970's as a child...actually met Idi Amin when he visited and "lectured"...we couldn't mention the name of Milton Obote' in public for fear of being overheard and reported...I attended the Lincoln School with lots of Americans but my best memories are of our dear friends the Wandera family (Barnabas, Benedict, Mary)...we spent hours at the university pool and each week would go to a drive-in movie theater in the outskirts of town, don't know exactly where it was....I recall a Cashco grocery store and a Wimpy's burger shop downtown on Kampala Rd....Still can taste Orange squash!

I was just a kid when Amin's madness dawned on the country. The evening the expulsion of Asians was anounced my visiting illiterate grandmother made the fololwing lament which I remember very well. She mournfully said;(translation to follow) "Amin agobye abayindi?! tuja kulira amaziga mazibu! Abalesiza ebintu byabwe byebekolera?! Uganda ya kubonabonera emyaka 15".Trans. "Amin has expelled the Asians?! We shall shed untold tears; depriving them of the products of their sweat?! Uganda will suffer torment for 15 years!" How prophetic! 1972 - 1986,well, almost. We grew up not knowing the taste of even basics such as sugar, salt,butter e.t.c Knew nothing of security, peace, human rights, progress e.t.c. We payed the price; both the expelled ones and the indegenous. I now live in S.A.

I can remember quite a bit about the school Mr Bartlett headmaster, Miss Lease, Mr Heathcote, and scary Mrs Campion! We lived for a time in Kintu Road and then The Ridgeway on Kololo Hill. Everyone has commented about how great the photos are but for those of us who were born and lived in uganda upto 1973, it is where we have our childhood memories.No matter where you are,you cannot help but be drawn back to a place that holds so much of what is precious in your hearts.We may have lost our parents,maybe family members now live in different parts of the world and our firnds and neighbours have moved on. However, when we see these pictures, you get this overwheming feeling of living thos days again and surely that is priceless? I think it is!!

Great to view photographs of Kampala.Brings back lots of sweet memories.I am disappointed that you have concentrated only on Kampala main buildings. It would have been nice to also include Lugogo, Makerere Universiaty, Kololo etc photos, which is part of Kampala. Look forward to seeing more pictures in future.
