How We're Celebrating "Red Friday" Before the Super Bowl 2-07-25

What is "Red Friday"?
It's a 34 year old Kansas City Tradition that brings the community together.

Red Friday is far more than just a day to wear red; it's a celebration of community spirit, support, and togetherness. It embodies the heart and soul of Kansas City.

Community spirit is definitely at the heart of Red Friday in Kansas City. It's a day when everyone in the community comes together, regardless of background or differences, to show their support for the Chiefs and each other. This sense of unity and shared purpose is what makes Red Friday so special. Many Red Friday events also incorporate charity drives and fundraising efforts for local causes. This adds a meaningful layer of community involvement and generosity.

Red Friday is a vibrant tradition that strengthens the fabric of the community in numerous ways. There is a collective energy and enthusiasm. Red Friday is more than just a celebration of football; it's a day that highlights the generosity, unity, and pride of the Kansas City community. It's a reminder of the positive impact that collective efforts and shared experiences can have on bringing people together.

The love for the Chiefs transcends various demographic lines, bringing together people of different ages, backgrounds, and cultures. It fosters a sense of inclusiveness within the community. Events often feature local musicians, artists, and performers, giving them a platform to showcase their talents and gain recognition. Schools and educational institutions often participate in Red Friday, using the excitement to teach students about teamwork, sportsmanship, and community engagement. Red Friday encourages volunteerism, as people come together to organize and participate in events. Volunteering helps build a stronger sense of community and creates lasting bonds among participants.

Mental Well-being: The camaraderie and positive energy associated with Red Friday can boost mental well-being, reducing stress and creating a sense of joy and anticipation. And of course, putting on your finest Chief's swag or just wearing a hint of red also show that you embrace all this.

This year:
Red Friday before the Super Bowl is an especially exciting time in Kansas City! The city ramps up its support for the Chiefs, and the community spirit is at its peak. Here are some highlights of what happened:

Schools across Kansas City got involved by organizing pep rallies, dressing up in red, and showing off their Chiefs pride. Special Event: The American Heart Association often held events on Red Friday to coincide with National Wear Red Day, promoting heart health awareness. This year, they held an event at the Intercontinental Kansas City on the Plaza.

A great many local businesses have decorated their storefronts in red, are offering special promotions, and hosted events to celebrate Red Friday and the upcoming Super Bowl. This all has created a very festive atmosphere throughout the city.

Governor's Proclamation: Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has proclaimed Red Friday to recognize the Chiefs' achievements and rally support for the team. This year, she emphasized the Chiefs' dynasty and their third-straight Super Bowl appearance. Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has ordered the Missouri State Capitol dome to shine red and gold beginning Friday, February 7, 2025, in celebration of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIX appearance. The dome will shine red and gold from sunset to sunrise through Sunday, February 9. The good things Red Friday embodies are one thing that all local politicians can agree on. It's nonpolitical and honors the community in two states.

Friendly Bets: Politicians from Kansas and the opposing team's state (in this case, Pennsylvania) have placed friendly bets on the Super Bowl outcome. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly bet Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro some Kansas City barbecue if the Chiefs win. Missouri's Governor Kehoe also announced a friendly bet with Shapiro with Missouri-grown beef and an assortment of Kansas City favorites, including Gates Bar BBQ Sauce, Scott’s Kitchen BBQ Sauce and Rub, and Chase Candy Company Cherry Mash. Kansas City Mayor Lucus has bet the Philadelphia mayor Gates BBQ. If Philly wins, politicians in Pennsylvania are going to be getting some super eats. I'm not sure what anyone but the KC mayor will get if the Chiefs win. However, Philadelphia's mayor has put Philly Cheese Steak on the line. All of this has been in good fun.

Along with today's Red Friday, there have been various community gatherings rallying the Chiefs on, especially at Union Station, with fans coming together. "Good Morning America" gave an early morning coverage on the Chiefs rally. Stay-at-home fans could watch all on their TV's plus also on special expanded local TV sport coverage about the Chiefs in New Orleans. No one was left out.

The main public buildings in the Kansas City have all been lit up in red ever since the playoffs first started, as they often are on regular Red Fridays during football season.

Red Friday before the Super Bowl is a time of heightened excitement, unity, and celebration in Kansas City. It has been a day when the entire community came together (whether at home or out with others) to cheer on their team and to enjoy the festivities. Most regular Red Fridays are the same, too, but just a little less high key. Kansas City absolutely loves their Chiefs, and that love seems to bring out the best in people and provides good spirits in all.
