Grand Canyon Star Party 2006

Year number thirteen in a row for me....this was one of my favorite (so far). I think every year is richer as I look forward more and more to see my extended "family" one week every June. And it never disappoints. We were there again in large numbers for one common purpose...to hopefully blow the socks off every Park visitor we could with views through our scopes. For all those that have never stood under a truly dark sky with stars from horizon to horizon, a blazing Milky Way, and 50 telescopes set out for their use to see the planets and deep sky objects, we did what we could to give them such a glimpse through the "picture window" of our night sky. After seeing one of the more amazing holes in the ground during the day, we try to show them a glimpse of the just-as-amazing heavenly vista, putting into perspective how truly overwhelming our cosmic ride really is. We had eight of eight clear nights, mostly warm and calm, a thousand wows and a million laughs. Thanks to everyone that came out to share the sky with the Canyon visitors...here's a few camera shots that I was able to get during the week-long stay. I was fortunate enough to be invited to stay a night at the former Aiken residence down by Roaring Springs on the North Kaibab trail, and hike over for the North Rim Star Party Tues night. What a great effort Margie gives up there. And, of course, thanks to Dean Ketelsen who got this whole thing started and continues to work tirelessly each year at the South Rim to organize and manage the event. Thanks also to Park Ranger Chuck Wahler for the overall coordination efforts each year by the National Park Service, and Ranger Marker for the day-to-day management this year. And, of course, the whole Wahler family for their friendship and support. And all you other extended "family" for the great time. Let's do it again.
