Soapy, If you know anything about the world of human suffering, you would know that a picture will go much further in educating many people as opposed to selling the medium for which you communicate (globally) and save one life. this is without a doubt the most horrific thing to ever see. These poor children who did not ask to be brought into this world and have to suffer like this. This world is such a sad sad place. With so much money in this world there is no reason, no excusees at all, that these children should have to live their lives like this. Something needs to be done. Not to mention these so called charities put more of the donation money in their pockets then go to these poor people. So sad, so very sad. God bless these children.

this is beyond tragic. it may sound harsh, but perhaps the child would be better put out of it's misery. how can a parent, in love with their child or not, KNOWING it will never live or survive this, let it just go on and on in agony.

Moving photos. It's difficult to view such suffering, especially from the safe and warm confines of home; but so very neccessary. Thanks for going into the field and bringing these images "home" so that we can at the very least be reminded how lucky we are (present politcal climate notwithstanding). Great work. Voted. The disturbing thing about these pics is that the whole scene seems to be played out on the street. No matter how poor and destitute the society, it's hard to believe that there isn't the most basic shelter for a dying child. The most desperately poor place I've seen is Dhaka (Bangladesh), and even there were shelters for the homeless who were dying. Lets keep in mind that IF the claims of Hinduism are true, there is no tragedy in this scene. In fact, nothing wrong at all. It's just some (previously bad) person paying of his/her very bad karma that s/he picked up in a last life. It's entirely deserved. In fact, some teachers of the Bhagavad Gita would tell us that it's actually wrong to help this child, because we are interfering with Karmic law, and reducing their "payback" of bad karma. I know that will be controversial, but I'm just repeating the claims of Hinduism. It's not my idea, don't shoot me.

Y bueno, no puedo mas que recordar esa cita de David Suárez quien escribió: “El encuadre de Kevin Carter es el mismo que el del ave de rapiña que espera impaciente la muerte del niño. Yes he looks like an old wise man in a way.. and maybe an old wise man dying would share the same mode of consciousness as this child was experiencing.. I think the mind would not be functioning in both the cases...or at least reduced to the minimum. I said earlier the kid only sort of cried once (not really) he just did not have the energy reserves.. they would feed him some baby formula through a medicine dropper...food was not a priority for the little guy..again no enegy for digestion (I imagine) Some genetic disease I would think. I believe he was about two months old.. it was the young girl in the background..her first baby. The older woman is the grandmother and the man the grandfather. Yes they were beggars...no they did not harm the child. So unfortunate...that scene. I watched them bathe him at one point, it was not believable...the physical condition.

Pbaseguy is all too wright! These are fantastic pics to shock! The parents were probably beggers.It is known that they sometimes cut off their own childs arm or leg to raise more money begging.We live in a strange world.Wake up!

I was wondering how old the kid was, because his fingers and also the expression on his face don't look like as if he was a newborn. He seems to be more an old, wise man, who really knows what life and suffer is, than an innocent baby who just came into this cruel world. But he is small... How long has he been suffering on the street?

No one to blame here. We don't get the real deep down story from these photos but merely see images of despair out of context. This is pure photojournalism. This sort of thing happens in all corners of the world including the U.S. and Europe, Former Soviet Union and Asia. Has and will occur throughout the pages of past, present and future. No getting past it, but applying blame to others shows the commentor's lack of understanding of poverty and it's vicious cycle. You can do something to make death easier but you can't stop the inevitable.

If you look closely at the adults, they don't seem to be starved at all. It would make you wonder why the child is severely malnourished or if it was intentional as a props for begging on the streets. This is rampant in Asia.

Mark, I hate getting into stuff like this, but this child is not the fault of our President George Bush. Had any other person be in office in the United States, this child would still be suffering. President Bush is not the bringer of pain and suffering to the world. I believe these pictures are from India. And the suffering of people in India is nothing new. If evil is what is causing this child to be sick, it is not the evil in the United States, but that in India. And before you go and blame George Bush again, let me ask you this question, what have YOU done to help this child?

These are heart breaking photographs. I agree that we need to all work together to end these tragedies. I myself wouldn't blame one person for this , just like I wouldn't blame someone for the people suffering from hurricane Katrina. Many of us, myself included find it hard enough to keep our own lives in order, let alone managing the rest of the worlds problems. Let us work together and do what we can instead of bashing leaders who were chosen by the people.

And I can very good understand that you stopped taking your camera with you after your second visit. When we become more involved with tragedies like this making images seems so unimportant and to painfull. I came across this scene on main street Pune India They had some test results on paper.. I did not know what it meant, but I knew the child was dying. Of course I gave some money and all that. Was going to document the "story" but decided to not bring my camera after my second visit. Stopped by regularly..became friendly with the family. The child died two weeks later. A relief I think...horrible it was.

When you see these photo's you have to stand still by the fact that people don't choose for this life but they are born in a world with 2 faces, rich and poor! We in the western world have to give much more love and money to help them and not walking away from these photo's, this is reality, how sad it is. Mark: It's all right there in the four photos. Abject poverty in a third-world nation. A family lacking the basics of pre and post-natal health care. A child dying, most likely from a disease that could easily be treated in less impoverished countries. How much more does anyone need to know?

Please post more photos and tell the story of this child. As it is, it is the photos evoke shock, but lacks vital details that provides more information.

You know.. the kid would wheeze and have difficulty breathing.. but when I seen him yawn once or twice, well.. I think you can understand the emotion. He only half cried once while I was around... simply didn't have the energy. Very unfortunate circumstance.

Very very sad Dean. I was going regularly to check in on the kid... without the camera. He died about 2 weeks after these images were taken. I have not really looked at these images in a while. It was a shock all over again...very sad. Bruce
