The pagoda was built by Huai Yun, in honor of a Buddhist Priest, named Shandao, one of the originators of Pure Land Buddhism. It originally was 13 floors in height, but two floors have worn away over the 1300 year history of the pagods. But it is still sufficiently dtable to accomodate a modern transmission antennae.
