great camera

I still use my DSC H1 as a camera for rough trips like caving, jungle treking but have moved up to Sony A100 for more serious photography. I have taken over 20,000 photos with DSC H1. It is a great camera and I am reluctant to part with it. Two repairs to date exposure button broke off (not surprising after rough use & 20,000 photos) and moisture during one caving trip caused flash to malfunction. Excellent camera. cheers Georgehttp://www.pbase.com/junglegeorge/root

I have had this camera for a year.

It was a little quirky learning how to use the AF/manual focus but overall
a good camera.
DO NOT like the fact you cannot disassemble the lens. But take what you can
get if you like auto focus. Got careless and a tiny amount of sand cost 200$ to remove.
Currently the camera is only about 300$.
Also had two issues with the LCD screen, but Sony fixed promptly.

Battery life is excellent, and a 1g mem stick was sufficient every use except for one event.
Hopefully Sony will break into the DSLR scene at some point in time.
The R1 seems like a waste of money, but I am sure is a nice camera.

i'm not a professional, i'm what i would call a beginner photography enthusiast. i read photography magazines, photography books, and online reviews of digicams regularly.

i have had a chance to own both the Canon S2 and the Sony H1 for a month and i can definitely say that you can't go wrong either way, they are both amazing cameras. but i kept the sony and returned the canon...

Here's why (nonprofessional personal preference only):

1) looks and feels more expensive/professional (got more oohs and aahs). most people could guess the Sony cost around $500, but some people thought the S2 was "around $250".
2) uses only 2 AA batteries instead of 4 AND comes with 2 rechargeable NiMH batteries (canon provides only alkalines-- uesless!)
3) but the main reason was the big LCD screen which made framing pictures outdoors and in the sun much more enjoyable, not to mention showing off the pictures (2.5 inches instead of the 1.8 on the canon)
4) got better results right out of the box
5) i like the extra dial-knob (similar to the dial knobs on the sony clies) that controls the manual settings on the H1 which works much faster and more intuitive than the canon (manual settings are controlled by the four-way buttons on the back of the camera)

...
however, on the other hand, the main thing i miss from the canon is the memory format (secure digital is MUCH cheaper than sony memory sticks) and i miss the ability to zoom while shooting movies (which you can do on the canon)...

Just started posting pictures to my new Cybershot H1 2006 gallery! Some taken with telephoto adapter and will post more soon using close up lens. Click on my name to view!

I have just purchased this excellent camera and 1.7 telephoto adapter and close up lens. Initial results are great and I will be posting a Cybershot 2006 gallery soon. By the way with the telephoto adapter you don't lose any stops, so I get 735mm (35mm equiv) at f3.7!!
Great stuff! Check out my gallery soon, my existing one was mainly with my Pentax Optio WP (Great in Macro mode! otherwise fairly average)

I do to have good shots with this camera, especially macro. Unfortunately I hate it's lense that usually cause CA on high contrast photos. And the AF is sometimes frustating.

I'm very satisfied with my Sony H1 - Big Zoom (12x) and with Telephoto lens 1.7x (20x)

I've had one for a few days and it's terrific. Lens is sharp. Functionality fantastic. The Zeiss lens situation is not as important, I don't think. The name has been licensed in the past to lenses not made by Zeiss.

I am really looking forward to this one. The image stabilization feature alone makes it worth looking at. My only complaint is that this is not a Zeiss lens.
