Winter Kill

Green Valley, AZ

This is the result of an unexpected (at least by me) hard freeze over a couple of nights near New Years. This cactus has seen better days.
So much for the warm Arizona weather.

And after 60 years my arms feel like they could fall off, being up in the air all day on the job anyway. ;-)

Paul - as you know, I love the desert museum. In another month or so, the blooms start to appear, and it is a beautiful place to visit and shoot photos.
But if you start cactus from seed, be prepared to wait a while, as most of them are slow growers. The saguaro takes about 70 years to grow an arm.

When we were at the desert museum, really loved that place by the way, they sold small potted cactus plants in the gift shop and we considered buying a few but then I thought about the difficulties of traveling back home with it and didn't get any. Some place even sold cactus seeds, that's what I should have got. Paul.

Paul - I think this one was about $19. It was already a decent size when I planted it last April. I also bought a couple of other small ones that were about $10-15.

Out of curiosity how much do the little Home Depot cactus plants like this cost? Paul

Ha ha, I was wondering if that was one of the Home Depot cacti. Maybe it was supposed to be an indoor plant. Look at it as an investment in photography props because it makes for a real neat shot and the title is a killer.......... Paul

LOL. We flew back here on the 30th, and we already had had a couple of cold nights. It didn't look great. Then the next couple of cold nights just finished it off. So much for a Home Depot special.

The little guy in the background appears to be healthy still. Maybe the neighbor came over and sprayed it with roundup. Paul
