Destination Paddled: Petrie Island, Orleans, Ontario
Date: September 17, 2020
Number of Paddlers: 3
Temperature: 14C (57.2 F)
Distance paddled: 8.8 km (5.5 miles)
This was not our “planned” paddle but the winds were wicked so we decided to head to our old standby .... Petrie Island, and go into the back bays where we would be sheltered by the island and trees from the winds. As you can see by the temperatures it is starting to cool off here as well. However, it is below normal.
The absolute highlight of this trip was the number of Canada Geese we saw. They all had the same idea as we did and were sheltering from the winds. I have never seen so many geese in one spot in my life! And of course we were in amongst them. I guess they are gathering to get ready to head south. We were very careful not to provoke them. I can't imagine being attached by a bunch of angry Canada Geese.
We did go check out a couple of beaver lodges. That was pretty interesting as well. Especially the one with all the Canada Geese on it!
We also saw a cormorant. We did see three Blue Heron as well. A couple were trying unsuccessfully to hide from us and one came up out of the reeds and startled us.
Note that I also had a senior moment and forgot to turn on my GPS to track the route until we were almost rounding the corner out into the Ottawa River and the wind. I fudged the track in but couldn't match the colour of the rest of the track. Ooops.
Enjoy the pictures.
