Royal Scots Grey statue reminded me of a visit my wife and I made to Homerton Hospital,in Hackney,London back in 1987.Her paternal grandfather had been admitted to the dementia rooms. He was on the top floor, housed in a ward with 11 other old folk.Only one of these auld buddies was still aware of the world around them. After several visits,I sought permission to talk with the man concerned,as the nurses pointed out,he'd been in that room for the past 10 years, and never had any visitors. It took several visits before he talked to me.He was 88 and had been Sargeant Major Farrier in the Royal Scots Greys. He'd lost both legs in action and was now stranded in this ward.He claimed his son was 66, retired, in Glasgow,a former policeman, but never came to see him. But,his greatest annoyance was that as he sat there day after day, watching the horse racing on the telly, none of the nurses would take his bets down the bookies. One day we took him out of the hospital on an outing. He was like a wee boy,in 7th heaven, even in a wheelchair. On our next visit,he'd died.

Crail 1978. Well it all began in 1973,when,as a young man I went to London. In those days the Presbyterian Church of Scotland ran a Hostel in WC1.a friendly wee place for young Scots arriving in the big city.Affectionately known as The Caley Club.I stayed there for 2 years.(you were only supposed to be able to stay for 6 months).Anyway,I digress.Mostly we were fledgling bank workers.Back to Crail.I got sick of London Banking and returned to Scotland in 1977 to do a course at Dundee Tech. College in Bell Street. One day in '78 I fancied a day off ,so I headed off for a tour of all the places in Fife,I'd heard of but not been to.(that I could remember ,anyway). This "tour" took me to Crail, late in the afternoon.I walked out to the end of the pier, and who was sitting there, reading poetry, but the bloke who'd had the room next to mine in The Caley Club.Co-incidence ,or what? Haven't seen him since.

Hi Derek, great diversity in your galleries, I enjoyed my visit and liked all the galleries, except the last one - but hey we've all got our cross to bear.

Love the Sea Eagle myself - bought John Loves book in 1985 on the reintroduction project and have followed it ever since, i hope the east Coast project is as successful and may they darken your skies for many years to come ;)

Regards,

Dave.

You have some excellent images there Derek and I loved the family album, great idea and thanks for sharing. Thanks also for the comments you made on the Scotland picture. Sorry I didn't reply earlier, it's a bad habit I'm afraid, but I do appreciate all comments made, and yes it was on Mull. It was my first visit to Scotland, believe it or not and I just loved the place. I have family from Fife and friends from the border regions and they've been telling me for years how beautiful a country Scotland is. Well I finaly found out for myself how true that was. Hope to get back there soon, until then I can enjoy see the beauty of it through you're images. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

George.
