Tamron 18-200 Snapshots

All photos in this Gallery, with the exception of the first two, were taken with a Canon 20D and the Tamron Af XR Di LD (IF) 18-200mm 1:3.5-6.3 lens. The first two pictures were taken with my trusty ole Canon G3. All pictures were handheld, no tripod. Note many were taken at full zoom or full wide angle. My impression of the lens is favorable. I particularly appreciate the compact size, light weight and zoom range. This gallery, I think, illustrates the practical range afforded by this economical lens. Sure, there are shortcomings, but as a walk-around lens that can capture those quick shots when you may need more wide or tele it performs well. The photos were all tweaked in PS Elements, using only auto levels, cropping and sharpening. The pictures are best viewed using the ORIGINAL size option.

Well I just bought the Nikon D-300 and first digital. I've discovered that I need a quality lens for what I photograph i.e. weddings, church functions, retirements, portraits, outdoor and aviation, pretty much routine stuff for ya'll pros. Any suggestions about what type of lens for this most excellent camera. Care to opine? best regards picturetakers.

Be careful with sharpening. High sharpening looks good on a monitor, but tends to look worse on prints. So, if you intend to print, use lower sharpening. But, higher sharpening does look good on the web.

I'm also contemplating the Tamron 18-200 or the Sigma 18-200. These photos have definitely proven the pictures from the Tamron lens are sharp and beautiul. I just got my Rebel XTi and am just learning. I appreciate the tip on turning up the sharpening all the way. Thanks for the time you have taken to upload these. I am curious to know how this lens performs indoors or in low light. Do you have any indoor photos, holiday photos or auditorium type photos you could share for us? That is where I usually end up with problems! Thanks again.

Hi. Your Pictures are great very sharp with color and i dont see any artifacts of sharpening. I would like to know how do you sharpen your photos exactly. Im using Phooshop cs2. What kind of parameters are you using in Photoshop element. I have the same lenses on my EOS30D.

Thank you so much for posting these pix. I myself found very little "helpful" information on this lens and was thankful & amazed at finding your photos. You are a great "amateur" photographer. I am just getting back into it as a hobby (also as an amateur) after laying down my 35mm several years ago. Although I recently bought a Nikon D200, I feel much more comfortable having just ordered the Tamron 18-200mm after seeing your Canon’s results with this lens. If the Nikon version performs as yours does I’ll be a happy camper! Thanks for the confidence building pix (they ARE great).

HI, Dave Thanks for your comments. All pictures in this gallery were edited in Photoshop Elements 3.0. I use only the simple adjustments such as auto levels, crop, lighting, sharpening, etc. I probably average 30 seconds or less of editing per picture. I have the sharpness level set to maximun on my Canon 20D with this lens. I too enjoy a sharp photo. This lens seems to work well with the 20D and the sharpening components in Photoshop. Hope this helps in your decision.

Shenandoah, These photos are great! Clearly you've got a good eye, and you've added to my confusion over my purchase (in a very good way). I'm testing to decide between the Tamron 18-200 vs the Tamron 17-50 with the Tamron 70-300. For some reason I tend to focus on sharpness (poor pun intended). Two questions for you if you don't mind; How much post processing are you doing, and how much in-camera sharpening are you using. I'd love to end up with photos like your's, I'm just trying to avoid doing a lot of digital magic to git there! Thanks, Dave

Thanks for all the great examples. I'm contemplating the lens as a cheap(ish) all rounder, instead of the more expensive Nikkor VR. The pics give me a good idea that it may well be worth it. Thanks again.

You don't know how happy and glad I am to have seen your photos Doug! Having bought a 10D last December, I was looking out for a good lens but couldn't afford the Canon hardware and turned my attention to Sigma and Tamron as the 18-200mm looked like the answer to a prayer. Then I looked at the photos on PBase and found this :-http://www.pbase.com/iamarika/springday My heart sank! I thought the pics all looked so out of focus and very soft and I immediately put it down to the Tamron lens as I'd seen loads of very sharp and clear photos taken with Canon lenses on PBase. I was going to look into buying a Canon lens (or two) but then found your galleries. Thank God you posted your shots here! I don't know exactly what is 'wrong' with the pics in the link above, but you photos are more in keeping with the quality I would have expected to get from a camera like my 10D or your 20D. So, now I'm back on track and ready to buy myself the Tamron. I will of course look at the Sigma version as well, if I can find any sample photos that is. Your photos are excellent and show off the Tamron in a most favourable way. It gets 'my' vote anyway! BTW, no disrespect intended to the owner of the galleries in the link above, but I did see a very obvious difference in quality of shot there and am so glad to see now that it's 'not' the lens that's to blame. Anyone know what the difference is? I hope to post some photos soon using my 10D and either Tamron or Sigma 18-200mm lens. Thanks for putting your own photos up Doug. Geo.

Jason: I find the focus to be quick. However; I have nothing to compare it with other than my Canon G3. It's much faster than the G3. It seems as fast as my Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens which is excellent. I am quite comfortable with the focus speed.

Dear Doug, Ive got a few (very) quick shots with the Sigma up on my site now (http://public.fotki.com/ISayers/2005/sigma_18-200_dc/ ). I need to wait for some decent light to get the best out of it, but overall I`m very pleased. I think overall the two lens are very similar, but I definately need some practice using mine! Thanks Doug, I will take your advice and wait to assess the sigma. However based on your shots here think I would be very happy with the Tamron. I had considered a dedictaed telephoto lens, but to my (untrained) eye I cant see a lot of difference between the ones in my price range and these superzooms, certainly not enough to make up for carying multiple lens`. I appreciate you taking the time to help me, enjoy life with your 20D, I am finding it a joy to use no mater what lens is attached. Regards, Ian Sayers

Hello, Ian: Thank you for your post regarding my Tamron 18-200mm picture gallery on PBase. Because I had difficulty researching the 18-200 I decided to post the pictures to the web to assist those who were considering its purchase. I recently purchased the 20D with the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens based on reviews/tests on the web. I am very pleased with the 28-75 in all respects. It performs well, as expected. In order to extend both wide and telephoto range capabilities, however; I decided to consider adding the 18-200mm Tamron to my equipment. The lens seemed perfect based on its' specs. There were no reviews I could find on the net and very few testing results. I managed to find one site which had approximately 20 pictures taken with the 18-200 with their original large files intact. By downloading the large files and editing them in Photoshop Elements 2.0 I was able to determine the lens produced good results. Accordingly, I decided to take a chance on the 18-200 and purchased it from B&H, NY $399). I am very pleased with the lens and recommend it without hesitation. The pictures it produces straight out of the 20D require minimal editing in some photo software for best results. I believe this to be true of any lens that would be used on a digital SLR. I also correct the images from my 28-75mm and all those from my G3 as well. This is not a problem for me because I always edit all of my pictures. While there will likely be little difference in the performance of the Sigma 18-200mm vs. the Tamron, it may be wise to wait until some reporting is out on the Sigma, which, I believe is any day now. I guess I was a little impatient, but I am happy with the Tamron and will stick with it. Hopefully, I have been of help. Thank you for posting your pictures, You seem to have got more out of this lens than other users whose photos I have seen. I too have upgraded from a (much loved) G3 to a 20D, and am looking for a replacement for the kit lens. Given your experience would you recomend buying this lens? I had been waiting to see how the sigma 18-200 DC performs before purchasing. I would greatly appreciate your opinions on the matter.
