Kathy- There are many of us that grew up with 163st mall as fond memories. I remember the little amusement park and the train that circled. What about the movie theater? Huge screen that you can't even begin to find today. I remember in the summer the theater would charge .35 a ticket for kids to see a couple of movies and cartoons. No matter how bad the movies were, the two thousand or so kids were happy to be in A/C. And it wasn't just the mall, there were strip stores all around like the Eagle Army-Navy store across the street. It is too bad what has happened to that mall and really, almost all of the places I either shopped at or lived in Miami. I have relatives buried in cemetaries that I am afraid to visit becase of the area. So sad.

Hello everybody. Is there any of you who might remember a cafeteria in 1951-1952 by the name of Browns cafeteria? I think it could have been located on Alcazar and LeJeune. My father joined a man by the name of Brown, who operated Browns cafeteria in Miami, my father opened under the Brown name in Coral Gables. He only operated for about 9 months, closed in May of 52. Also I am looking for the old homested on Coral way in W. Miami, I think I found it at sw63rd ave& Coral way. If this was the house it has been remodled. This was a new home in 1951, this one seems to be the only home large enough , plus it has the bus stop in from of the house. I was a boy of 14 at this time. I am just trying to take a trip down memory lane. If anyone has information, Robbin helped me all he could last year. Please emai me at johnofseminole@aol.com

Anyone remember the little Reddi Kilowatt "Kite Flying Safety" comic books they used to give out in school. Mostly would remind you not to fly them near the power lines...but they also taught you how to build your own kite. Also, I'm old enough to remember the little amusement park at 163rd Street with the merry-go-round - and the bar and grill facing it. And later I was working at the Woolworth's when they finally enclosed it....and then the shot those scenes for "Making Mr. Right" there. Shame what happened to that mall...and that whole area.

Not to bust anyone's bubble, but Reddy was created at the Alabama Power Company by Ashton B. Collins, Sr., and debuted March 11, 1926. He was subsequently licensed by some 300 electrical companies in the U.S. and abroad looking to sell homes on using the relatively new technology.

I too am very familiar with Reddy Kilowatt. My grandfather was a VP for FP&L in the 60's and from what I recall, the Reddy Kilowatt campaign was his idea. He was VP of sales.

My dad, Harry Nevins, aka Harry the Hatter, came to Miami and established the first men's hat shop in 1919. The original stores were located on Miami Avenue next to Burdine's and in the Seybold Arcade. During the early 1940's the store relocated to Flagler Street betwen the DuPont building and Halcyon Arcade. Finally in the late 1940's he moved to SE First avenue across from Grable's Bakery.

I was involved as a child in a little jingle Florida Power and Light produced at a small recording studio for one of their commercials in the 50's. There were maybe 10 kids singing it and I was amongst them. It was for Reddy Kilowatt. It went like this " I'm a real live wire and I never tire yessir I'm a real hot shot, I can cook your meals turn the factory wheels, yes I'm reddy Kilowatt ". Does anyone remember those tv ads? Funny what one remembers over time

Earl - my dad worked for National Bo, and then became the local distributor for National Bo, Regal Beer & Ale, and Colt 45. Remember the Regal Brewery & sign that was located at the intersection of I-95 & 836 ? - If anybody has any pics or memoribila of the brewey or its products - I would be very interested!

Redi Kilowatt was embodied in a neon sign in right cenetr field at Mimai Stadium. He would jump up and down whenever a Miami Marlin got a hit! The Miami Marlins were oin TV sponsored by National Bohemian Beer with this jingle and a cartoon drawing of a bottle of beer - "That refreshin' flavor, light and clear, that refreshin' flavor is what I want in beer, I wish I had a bottle of Bo. I wish I had a bottle of Bo. That satisfying flavor of National Bohemiam Beer! They also had a liquid cleaner sponsor with an ad that included the concept of emulsifying stains. A piece of dirt was personsified and than sprayed with the product, and the dirt said "I never felt so emulsified in all my life!" The most consiustent ad of that period was Wynn's Friction Proofing Oil which features a spinning rod making noise until it was lubricated with Wynn's Friction Proofing Oil. theri tag line was - "Friction is costing you money everday! - Why Pay to Pull Friction! Use Wynn's Friction Proofing Oil" another favoitre 50's ad was Py-Co-Pay toothbrush - "Py-Co-Pay, Py-Co-Pay toothbrush. The brush that more dentists recommned, with the rubber tip on the end!"

Ann, I vaguely remember that Westland commercial. It was when the mall was new because it opened in the early 70's. Probably 80% of the employees at Sears Northside tried to transfer to the new store at Westland because Northside was getting really bad as far as robberies, car burglaries, and shoplifting galore, which resulted in declining shoppers and business, but the new store could only take so many. I wasn't one of the lucky ones so I stayed at Sears Northside for a while and then left for an airline job. Don

If any can be found, perhaps images from TV commercials could be added as well?? I am HAUNTED to this day by a weird creepy commercial that ran in Miami in the 1970s. I believe it was for Westland Mall, either when they first opened or if they remodeled it. The add had a woman stretched out on her side singing "Hello all you shoppers! I'm Westland Mall!...". Whoever put that ad together really earned their money because to this day that image and that song sticks in my head. Does anyone else remember this one?

What about "Johnny and Mack By The Railroad Track" c. 1950-60's? I believe they did auto body repair. They sure had a catchy tune in their advertisements - radio and later TV.
