Lake Euramoo is a maar – the result of explosions that occurred when molten rock hit the water table - set in the rainforest.
The lake consists of conjoined craters which, geologists have explained, must be the result of simultaneous explosions from two nearby volcanic vents because neither has infilled the other.
Local Aborigines have an oral account of the explosions, which geologists date as occurring more than 23,000 years ago.
