Harran is a very old town to the South of Urfa. It is claimed Abraham lived here, some 4000 years ago. What one can see nowadays is some rock, riddled with tunnels and with the ruins of a fortress on top. Some walls from Roman times or later. And a village, rather than a town, surrounding it, with peculiarly domed houses. The type of building seems to keep the houses cool (which I found them to be, even though it was hot when I came there, 1997). I cheat a bit in presenting in this gallery not just pictures of Harran, but also from quite an involuted ride I made up there in a taxi I shared with two other tourists. An Urfa taxi company had written to the Turkey Lonely Planet Guide authoress that so far little good had been written about that part of the country, and could she please correct this? When I enquired about a simple Harran ride I was invited to join her more extensive ride, and it was a very pleasant day, we saw weird stone deserts, shepherds somehow keeping stock alive in these deserts, and visited some people in their homes. And saw Harran. And she wrote nicely about the taxi company and Harran rides ever since.

HARRAN

Harran, Urfa’nın güneyinde çok eski bir ilçe. 4000 yıl kadar önce İbrahim’in burada ya şadığı iddia ediliyor. Bugünlerde orada görülebilecek şey, tünellerle ve zirvedeki bir kalenin kalıntılarıyla delinmiş kayalar. Roma zamanından veya daha sonrasından kalma kimi duvarlar. Ve onu çevreleyen, tuhaf kubbeli evleriyle ilçeden çok köy gibi olan bir yer. Binaların tipi evleri serin tutuyor gibi görünüyor (1997’de sıcak bir havada oraya gitmeme rağmen, ben evleri serin buldum). Bir Urfa taksi şirketi, Türkiye Lonely Planet Kılavuzu’nun yazarına, ülkenin o bölgesiyle ilgili çok az iyi şey yazıldığına dair bir mektup yazmış ve bunu düzeltmesini istemiş? Basit bir Harran gezisi ararken, o yazarın kapsamlı gezisine katılmak üzere davet edildim ve çok hoş bir gün geçirdim. Tuhaf taş çöller ve bu çöllerde hayvanları bir şekilde hayatta tutan çobanlar gördük ve bazı insanları evlerinde ziyaret ettik. Ve Harran’ı gördük. Ondan sonra taksi şirketi ve Harran gezisi hakkında iyi şeyler yazdı.
