My page with very many Turkish cities

Hasankeyf was a small village at the Tigris River, on the road between Batman and Midyat. It was famous for the ruined bridge crossing the river Tigris, a fortress on a hill overlooking the village, and for the wonder view one had of the village itself, as it idyllically laid along the rocks. Not forgetting rock hewn houses, a fine mausoleum and terraces that laid in the river, where one could have tea and enjoy the landscape. Over more recent years (I write this in 2020) it became famous for its fight against being submerged after a dam (the Ilisu Dam Project) higher up the river would take effect. The pictures are from a time when there still was hope it would not be submerged, but that has been idle. So what I show here probably does not exist anymore. For a rather well-illutstrated article of what's going on, see here. Also, I grouped in new sub-galleries some of the major sights, whereas formerly the gallery was a mixed bag.
The town was founded in Roman times as a border post with Persia. It started out as Cephe or Kiphas, and was renamed Hisn Kayfa by the Arabs who conquered it in 640. Later Artokids and Ajjadubids ruled, until the Mongols plundered it so thoroughly in 1260 that it never regained its glory. The age of the old bridge is unknown, it has been restored in 1116 by the Ortokid Fahr ed-Din Kara Arslan. In the Kale or citadel one can find the remains of an Ortokid palace (not very impressive, though) and a Ulu or Great Mosque. I used a fish eye a lot, some shots are bizarre, but they show how much there was to see in a rather compact space.

HASANKEYF
