The pictures show two different kinds of settings: first the traditional Turkish/Anatolian one, where woollen rugs cover the entire wooden floor and provide a good and decorative isolation against cold air coming from below. Moreover, rugs are used as pillows and coverings for sofas. This extensive use of rugs makes that anyone entering these rooms, has to remove his/her outdoor footwear and leave it in the corridor. The other kind of setting is the European one: carpets used as pieces of furniture, with decorative intentions more than practical; this fashion entered Turkish urban culture in the late 19th century, and adds to the ‘couleur locale’ of today’s so-called ‘charme hotels’.
