For about a year I have shown a gallery about Bitlis and Siirt, where I claimed Siirt was a very poor city. I still think it is, but during a September 2005 trip I found Siirt to be more worthwhile than I had thought. There are whole neighbourhoods that have fine and modern housing. Also, the center is larger than I first thought, and has modern blocks of offices, stores and banks just as in every other city. They have built a large and new mosque that wasn’t there when I first came. In 2010 I returned, and found improvement continued. I also found there was a bit shopping street that looked rather new, but not completely, it may have been there in 2005, I may have overlooked it.

Note people in Siirt will advise you to go and see nearby Tillo.

Bir yıldır bir galeride Bitlis ve Siirt’in resimlerini yayınlıyordum ve burada Siirt’in çok fakir bir şehir olduğunu iddia ediyordum. Hala öyle düşünüyorum, ama Eylül 2005’te oraya yaptığım bir ziyarette Siirt’in sandığımdan daha çok görülmeye değer bir yer olduğunu farkettim. Tümüyle güzel ve modern evlerden oluşan yerleşimler var. Ayrıca şehir merkezi de ilk düşündüğümden daha geniş ve diğer bütün şehirlerde olduğu gibi orada da modern ofis binaları, marketler ve bankalar var. İlk gittiğimde orada olmayan büyük ve yeni bir cami yapılmış. Yine de neredeyse hiç kaldırımı olmayan, köhne evlerin arasında tozların uçuştuğu büyük bir yer var. O bölgeyi çok sevdim. Orada da resimler çektim, ama buranın şehrin sadece fakir arka sokakları olduğunu gözden kaçırmayın.
