Tokat is one in a row of three cities that I like a lot. They are: Sivas in the South, a bit to the North Tokat, and finally Amasya, even further to the North. Between these two is the nice, but not overwhelming, Turhal. Travel further to the North and you will reach the Black Sea coast at Samsun. I have now stayed twice for a number of days in this city, and I enjoy it every time. It has no particular sights, the castle, the mosque, the old houses all can be seen in other cities too, but the way it all hangs together gives it some special charm. And the proximity to great, though small other cities to visit, like Turhal, Zile and Niksar adds to its charm. Even closer are the Ballica Caves, that are huge and well worth a visit. The town is busily restoring many of its monuments and although they first come out a bit too bright and shiny they will mellow and look quite right in a couple of years.

A note of warning: Many of the old houses that I took pictures of have disappeared, the aspect of the town is much more modern.

Tokat has been (and still is) famous for his old crafts: ‘bakırcılık’ (copper work), ‘dokumacılık’ (fabric weaving), ‘halıcılık’ (carpet weaving) and some twenty more trades. The most important one however is ‘yazmacılık’, the production of wood-printed cloth, for which Tokat is Turkey’s leading production center.

TOKAT

Tokat, çok sevdiğim ardý ardýna sıralanmış üç şehirden biri. Bunlar; güneyde Sivas, biraz kuzeyde Tokat ve son olarak daha kuzeyde Amasya. İkisinin arasında hoş olduğu halde çok etkileyici olmayan Turhal yer alıyor. Daha kuzeye gidince Samsun’da Karadeniz sahiline varılıyor. İki defa birkaç günlüğüne Tokat’ta kaldım ve her seferinde orada olmaktan keyif aldım. Görülecek özel bir şey yok; kale, cami, eski evler… bunların hepsi başka şehirlerde de görülebilir. Ama bunların hepsinin bir araya gelişinin özel bir çekiciliği var. Ayrıca, küçük de olsalar, Turhal, Zile ve Niksar’ı ziyaret etme olanağý sağlıyor olması Tokat’ın cazibesini arttırıyor. Daha yakında çok büyük ve görülmeye değer Ballıca Mağaraları var. İehirde birçok anıt restore ediliyor, ilk başta biraz fazla aydınlık ve parlak olsalar da bir iki yıl içinde matlaşıp oldukça iyi görünecekler.
