Without a doubt Petra is the most fascinating site in Jordan to visit. Many people do this in a one day visit, many, I understood, coming from abroad on a hasty trip from, for instance, Aqaba. They will get a decent impression of the highlights, like the treasury or Al Khazneh they may well have seen in The last crusade, an Indiana Jones masterpiece. But a longer stay is in order to fully appreciate the beauty of both the natural and manmade attractions the area has to offer. When editing these pictures I realized I must return, even though I had half a week on my hands I had missed too many things, or stayed too shortly on a spot. I think that when I return I will dwell longer in some of the valleys, to enjoy the quiet that can be had if you’re a bit off the beaten track. And I probably overlooked a few hundred rock graves, so ….
I show many pictures, some will find them repetitive, I find it a joy to photograph detail upon detail.

I made sub-galleries for some major sights like the Treasury, the Monastery and for a couple of trails I walked. Most pictures have been taken using gps, and you’ll be able to locate them in map view, though with all the reflections from the nearby rocks some will be off the actual spot. I tried and identified most of the major monuments, they’ll get captions. In 2021 I am identifying more, as I publish pictures in the Wikipedia Commons, using information from there for my own use.
