Beerenberg - arctic, volcanic, exotic

A photographic story about a journey to Jan Mayen, a Norwegian island in the Arctic sea at 71ºN latitude,
for climbing Beerenberg, the worlds northernmost volcano above sea level,
a still active stratovolcano, 2277 meters high.
Our goal was to encircle the whole crater rim, an enterprise no one had ever done before...
The journey took place 13-24.06.2008, where 10 Norwegians and 2 Icelanders participated.
A big thanks to Runar and Sigurður at Borea Adventures for helping us to safely make our dream come true!

Absolutely beautiful photography! Truly stunning! I was in the 1963-64 crew and spent just over a year on Jan Mayen. Look for Haygood in the crew photo on the Jan Mayen website. The days when Beerenberg could be seen were few and far between. But, believe me, the image of Beerenberg is permanently BURNED into my brain! I am very concerned about the lack of snow at Olonkinbyen so far into the year!

Eric, I must say that this is one of the most captivating galleries I've looked at on Pbase! This looks like National Geographic quality stuff. Hi, Vikings, Wonderful pictures, great experience, I can only envy you. Even the weather seemed to like you! I have only heard of Jan Mayen in connection with the WW2 as an important strategic and orientation point; now, I am glad that I can enrich and concretize my previous imagination.
