Huge icebergs are slowly sliding through the lake Jökulsįrlón. They come from the Breišamerkurjökull clacier, a southern extension of the Vatnajökull main ice cap,
which calves directly into the lake, as the lake actually extends quite far underneath the glaciers tongue. The lake itself is very young, created by
a temporary glacial meltdown in 1934-35, but it's still growing in size. It has increased from 7,9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today (as of 2009).
It's approx. 200 m deep, making it the 2nd deepest lake in Iceland. Jökulsįrlón drains directly to the ocean via a short river, less than 1 km long.
