Compact and lightweight design

Summary

Olympus Optical Co., Ltd. is pleased to introduce the µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80 compact camera. The latest 35 mm model brings the creativity and versatility of a wide-angle 28-80 mm 3x zoom lens to the best-selling µ[mju:] Series.

Stylish performance

The µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80's contours clearly retain the series' striking design concept. Along with this style, it features a wide-angle 28-80 mm 3x zoom lens that opens up new photographic possibilities. At the 28 mm setting, the lens offers greater versatility by eliminating the composition problems in shots of expansive landscapes, tall buildings and others of this type. It is also suited to wide-angle photography indoors. And at the 80 mm setting, the 3x zoom lens is ideal for portraits and other close-ups.
The high-performance glass aspherical lens elements not only deliver superior resolution, but also contribute to the camera's compact, lightweight design. The slim body measures just 120 (W) x 64 (H) x 49 (D) mm.

An array of features

The µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80's many advanced features include weatherproofing that takes the worry out of photography on various occasions, such as when at a beach or on a ski slope. It is also equipped with dioptric compensation and six flash modes for varied lighting conditions.
Available throughout the zooming range, the Auto Macro system can shoot A4-size close-ups at 80 mm. The optional remote control can trigger the shutter from as far as 5 m. To highlight its stylish lines, the µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80 comes in a champagne-gold color.

The µ[mju:] phenomenon

Since it was launched in 1991, the µ[mju:] Series has become a phenomenon that has won international renown.
Contributing to both easy portability and style, the distinctive sliding lens barrier doubles as the power switch. Featuring stylish contours and sophisticated colors, the design has won high regard for its low weight, compact dimensions and high-quality imaging.
The series is so popular that worldwide sales have reached 9 million units (as of the end of September 1997). Meeting the diverse needs in leisure photography today, the µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80 promises to build on this extraordinary record.

Main Features

High-performance wide-angle 28-80 mm 3x zoom lens

Offering the versatility of a wide-angle 28-80 mm 3X zoom lens, the µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80 opens up new possibilities in shots of expansive landscapes and tall buildings. The 28 mm setting is also suited to wide-angle photography indoors. Complementing this capability, the 80 mm setting is ideal for portraits and other close-ups.
The high-performance glass aspherical lens elements not only deliver superior resolution, but contribute to the compact dimensions and low weight as well.

Sophisticated design and finish

The ergonomic design's streamlined contours contribute to the µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80's excellent handling characteristics and stylish good looks. There is also a sliding lens barrier that not only protects the lens and viewfinder, but adds to the sophisticated lines. The latest µ[mju:] model comes in a stylish champagne-gold color that complements the distinctive design.

Worry-free weatherproofing

The µ[mju:] ZOOM Wide 80's weatherproofing protects against sand and dust as well as a sudden shower or splashing. Meeting the IEC grade 4 standards for "splash-proof," it offers extra reassurance at a beach or on a ski slope.

Versatile flash modes

Six modes make it easy to take great flash pictures. There is also a Soft Flash system that automatically adjusts the intensity of the illumination according to the distance from the subject.

Auto
To ensure that the illumination is appropriate, the flash fires automatically in low light or backlighting.

Auto-S
The red-eye effect-a common problem with flash portraits-is reduced by a series of pre-flashes emitted before the main flash fires.

Off
The flash does not fire in this mode, making it the right choice when flash photography is prohibited or the photographer wants to capture the mood of the moment.

Fill-in
The flash fires with every shot. Even when there are such complications as sidelighting or backlighting, Fill-in flash produces the balanced illumination essential to a lifelike image.

Night Scene
The intensity of the flash is determined by the foreground, while the length of the exposure is set according to the background. Slowing the shutter speed to as long as 4 sec., this mode captures both the subject in front and the background.

Red-eye Reducing Night Scene
This mode reduces the red-eye effect in pictures taken in the Night Scene mode. Except for the series of pre-flashes, it is identical to the Night Scene mode.

Other features

Auto Macro
Available throughout the zooming range, this feature creates Macro images up to A4-size at the 80 mm setting.

Spot Mode AE
This mode ensures accurate focusing and exposure for the main subject, regardless of the lighting conditions.

Focus Lock
This convenient feature keeps the subject in sharp focus while the photographer adjusts the composition.

Built-in dioptric correction
Dioptric correction of -2 to +1 is built in to compensate for any eyesight problems.

Remote control (optional)
The optional remote control makes it easy to trigger the shutter from as far as 5 m.
