This is one of the most splendid and colorful areas in the sky. The lower left part is dominated by Antares, a luminous red supergiant. Its yellow-reddish light is reflected by nearby dust (IC4606/vdB107). The small globular cluster NGC6144 is at the 2 o'clock position and the big globular cluster M4 is at the 3 o'clock position of Antares. Near the right edge of the image SH2-9, an emission nebula, and vdB104, a blue reflection nebula can be seen. IC4605/vdB108 is the blue reflection nebula at the 12 o'clock position of Antares. At the upper third of the image a nicely structured reflection nebula (IC4603/vdB105) with interlaced dust can be seen. IC4604/vdB106 is the bright blue reflection nebula around Rho Ophiuchi near the upper edge of the image.
The image is a mosaic of eight separate images.
