Once upon a time somebody built concrete steamships. They were built to help compensate for a steel shortage around 1916 at the beginning of WWI. The SS Atlantus was actually used to transport American troops back from Europe at the end of the war. She was retired from service in 1920. Six years later the Atlantus was bought to be used as part of a ferry dock. After necessary repairs were made in Virginia she was towed up to Cape May. Shortly after her arrival there, a storm hit. The ship broke free of her moorings. She drifted off the shoreline and could not be brought back in. Over the years and many storms later the ship has deteriorated and what you see is all that is left of her. It has turned into a rather interesting tourist attraction. She makes for a great foreground for pictures at sunset time.
