Two images showing the different family styles, Mallards vs Canada Geese.
Top Image: A large family of Mallards - Mom and a dozen young. But, where is Dad? This is typical for Mallards and many other types of ducks. Dad completes his manly fun job; then when the real family responsibilities start, he takes off with the boys.

A family of Canada geese. Typically Mom and Dad both look after the brood, usually one taking the lead whilst the other rides shotgun or one feeds whilst the other stands guard and protects.
