I and several other photographers had been waiting in the colddddd for a couple of hours for the Northern Hawk Owl to show. Most had left when all of a sudden a small bird was seen flopping around on the shoulder of the road. We were just about to check it out when the owl came swooping down and picked up the obviously injured little bird. The owl flew to a low branch on the far side of the road, where this image was shot.
In this image, the caught bird can be clearly seen, although I'm not sure of its ID. At first I suspected it to be a young Northern Cardinal, but the yellow beak doesn't seen to fit. It is probably an American Tree Sparrow as I saw several of those earlier flying along the side of the road.
