Prambanan

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Prambanan was unfortunately damaged, though by no means destroyed, by the tragic May 2006 earthquake which killed 5,782 people and left 36,299 injured in the region of Yogyakarta. Sadly, for safety reasons, visitors are now unable to approach too close to the temple buildings, and it is unclear how long it will be before they are sufficiently stabilised. Good perspectives of the overall site are still to be had, however, and it is an awe-inspiring scene and breathtakingly beautiful. Built perhaps fifty years after Borobudur, the main part of the Hindu complex consists of the glorious Candi Siva Mahadeva, soaring forty-seven metres high, flanked by two slightly smaller temples dedicated to Vishnu and Brahma, two further Candi Apit, or flanking temples, and nine small shrines – all enclosed by a wall. This main collection of temples was originally surrounded by 244 small shrines in four rows – only a handful of which have been rebuilt. What must this – the finest Hindu complex in Indonesia, and surely one of the finest in the world – have looked like when it was originally built!
