Red-shouldered Hawk

I spooked it while walking down a wooded path; this was taken once it landed.
It was quite a large hawk even though it does not look it from the picture.
Not a great photo, it was determined not to turn toward the light.

This is a great photo of a RSH, one can actually see why they are called red sholder!

nice photo and pose. This look like a eastern variety if it was big. Our red-shouldered are smaller and more colorful as they are much more reddish than this. What we have here in the west is the "elegans" variety. barely bigger than a Cooper's hawk but more massive. they are much smaller than the red-tailed we have here. I have one regular near my appartment and he's or she's so colorful, very red on the chess.

That nice rufus coloring on the back and the barring in the tail that you can peek through the folded wing primaries make me want ot ID this as an adult Red Sholder. Very sharp image.

That's just a really beautiful photo of a Red-shouldered Hawk.

I'd be dang proud of a shot that good, Mr. Sayer! I don't have a clue what it is, but it is beautiful. The coloring looks more like an owl to me, but that shows how little I know about such things. Hope you find out soon.
