Bonsoir Isabel, un petit mot pour vous féliciter pour la qualité de vos photos et le choix de vos sujets.

I am mightily impressed with the quality and impact of your photos from the Powershot A610. I have an A620 as a second camera. I am pleased with it, but haven't got as good results as you get. We all post-process our shots of course (I use Paint Shop pro X) and I was wondering how you get such vibrant images (without asking you to give away any secrets!). I particularly liked the cat pictures.
Well done!

Hi Isabel.

Thanks for dropping by! My life is pretty hectic, as I have a major, major exam in 5 weeks. Lisa is in her final semester, and has big exams coming up too.

I will let you know when I get to take some pictures again, probably around December..!

Hi Isabel,

Thanks for your kind comments on my galleries. I am priviledged to more than return the compliment. You have really wonderful pictures and your images with sound are extremely interesting works - perhaps a new art form?

best wishes, Ralph

Your galleries are spellbinding. I am especially impressed with your Photoshop editing gallery. I have a question for you. I am currently using Photoshop Elements (2.)and Canon's editing Program and would like to upgrade. Should I get the most recent version of Elements or get the full-blown Photoshop? I want to be able to do what you do but am wondering if Photoshop CS2 might be overkill and the price tag is $750 Canadian. I am not an Advertising firm or graphic artist so do not need a bunch of functionality I will never use. Thanks in advance for your opinion. You can see from my site what kind of photos I do:

Isabel, I thoroughly enjoyed spending the last hour going through a few of your galleries and I will be back later to look at the rest. You are so generous with giving tips and information and you are obviously having a blast with your photography. I'm sure this happens to everyone, but last year I found myself in a slump. It seemed like I had done everything I wanted to do and wasn't having fun any more. It's been over six months since I've shot anything but snapshots. We have vacation coming up soon so I'm looking forward to getting re-energized taking some travel photos. Anyway, looking at your galleries and seeing how much fun you are having is giving me the inspiration to get started again. Thanks again for sharing so much of yourself!

Bonjour Isabel
I am so happy that by accident i found your photos. I was looking to replace my 717 since 1 year with all the hoopla for the DSLR and have found some wonderful photos using the Sony wide angle lens.Looking at hundreds of photos taken with the Canon's Nikon's DSLR etc and have looked at all your 717 photos and comments, I do not see any reason to change for these expensive Stars...I have taken many great looking photos like you... not as many but after looking at your portfolio...my mind is made up to get myself the wide angle for $99 and work more on the techniques you used
Merci for sharing your enthusiasm with this Sony camera

Very nice photos indeed. It looks as though you made the maximum with your camera. I'm using canon A610 too. Let me just add that before I bought this camera I have looked at your photos and I thought to my self that it's possible to gain good shots with this camera. (You should talk to canon and see if you can be rewarded…:)Regards.

Hi Isabel,
I just found this site. I was looking for some help on a problem I have. I just purchased a Canon 350D and like it a lot so far. I have been using a Olym C2100uz. After I downloaded the Canon software. I went back and tried to load images from my Camedia Master and my Dell computer would not accept the camera. Anyone had this problem? I live in Anderson, SC, and photograph the Shining Rock area quite a bit. Thanks for any help. DT

Isabel,
Thanks for the complement on the wedding picture. Yes, it was taken with flash. I have the poor man’s bouncer, flash tilted 45 degree with a white card held by rubber bands. The other light source was the sunlight bounced off the concrete courtyard to the right. Most shots taken at this church foyer have very soft diffused light. I took a few test shots in P mode, checked and liked the result and left it there.
The shots of the ceremony were another story. The mix incandescent and outside lights made the gray wall in the back look like faded blue, the plants a ghastly green, while rendering skin tone a sickening yellow. I tried to improve the skin tone and then de-saturated the bridal gown. I think the color is still awful.
I am glad I was just a family friend. The father of the groom called me that morning and asked me to bring my “professional” camera. LOL. They hired a team of pros, 2 persons, each with 2 1-series Canon bodies with 16-35, 24-70 & 70-200IS. There is no way I can do this for a living.

Peter

I have exactly the same camera as you, and the teleconverter lens, but so far had neither developed the skills, the time nor the patience to be able to compete with you. Hi Isabel, Thanks for your visit to my galleries. Thanks also for the sympathy for my arm. No, I didn't break it. Just whacked it so hard it made my eyes water. It's better now the bruise is out, and starting to go. I put the gallery up to see how many people would look and comment. I've been suprised by the results. The sympathy vote bit was more a joke, but so many people have voted, it's now it the favourite galleries for a while.
I like your style of shooting, so expect some comments on some of your pictures.

Hi Isabel,
I was impressed with your photos of the Canon 10-22 lens you posted on dpreview. That is a lovely house you have. Asheville is such a beautiful location. I have a question about the 10-22 lens. I am looking to add a good quality wide angle lens for my 300D. I know the wide angle effect of the lens is great, but I'm concerned about the image quality. Does it approach the quality of L lens as some have stated?
By the way, I live near Hickory, not far from you.

Thanks,

Isabel Cutler19-Jan-2005 11:01
Are you using a wide angle converter? I suspect it could have something to do with that. It sounds like vignetting from the edges of the converter. If you are using a converter is it the Canon converter?

I just did a search of the archives in the Canon Talk forum and found a message that I had responded to when I was considering getting the converter...maybe a message in this thread will help you:

Hi Isabel
Your advice would be much appreciated. I have the Canon Powershot A80 and am disappointed with it. Photos that I take on wide angle appear to have a greyish tinge on each corner of the photo. This appears on the lcd screen too. I have been informed that it is vinyetting, which I find quite annoying as it ruins a potentially good photo. Is there something I can do to prevent this? Have you experienced this with the A80 that you have?
Antje Schulte01-Jan-2005 15:22
You're showing not only excellent photoghraphy, but also do it for a great cause, the adoptions... My hat is off to you. I'll come again. And I wish I could adopt one of the cats. :-)
Ian Lind 23-Dec-2004 18:23
The images of your cats are wonderful.
The only problem is that they've spawned a lust for the greater detail and clarity a dslr can deliver. I've been trying to get additional life out of my aging G2, but you've certainly shown what a camera upgrade can add.

Thanks so much for sharing!!

Isabel Cutler08-Dec-2004 10:18
It's better, but not superb. You really need it to underexpose to avoid burnt out highlights. The Nikon D760 is conservative too. You just get used to. I prefer underexposure to overexposure. I never loved the Rebel. I LOVE the 20D. If you can afford it, go for it. High ISO performance is way better. I don't think twice about using 1600. Also the lack of frustration by that darned start up and wakeup time is worth a lot!

Isabel
Michele Rodgers08-Dec-2004 02:04
Are you finding that the 20D does a much better job of metering than the Rebel? I am half wondering if I should move up the notch to the 20D. I am having great fun with my Canon S1IS (I think I use it like you use your 2100UZ) ... and I truly like the Rebel but find it does underexpose most of the time. As you suggested I am using the aperature mode more and that does help.

I am still enjoying all your photos.

Thanks, Michele

Hi Isabel,

Firstly, I would like to tell you that your photos really amuse me, and to me, your gallery is the best one around. I love it!

I would like to know why do you sometimes use high iso when taking photos or Louie, or other 'not fast' subjects. Do you think that the high ISO adds something to the photo, other than noise?

Thanks!

Hi Isabel,

I saw the B29 pictures on dpreview the other day. My compliments to the photographer. I am most impressed with the overall sharpness of the pictures, to say nothing of the completeness of the survey.

However, my S410 delivered fuzzy pictures out of the box, has been back to Canon Canada, has had its optics replaced, and still can't deliver that sort of performance. Did you run the B29 pictures through a sharpening program prior to posting on PBASE? If so, what do you use to get rid of the fuzzies?

Thanks,

John

Isabel:

Sorry to trouble you here,I can't seem to get registered in the DPReview forums - email problem. I'm also retired, and wonder if you still feel positive about the A80 (I currently have an A20 - 2.1mp). I'm torn between the A80, and Sony W1 and Kodak 7440 - both coming out in a week or so. On paper, at least the A80 has a lot of features I think I'd like. But I wonder about the 5mp of the Sony, and the small screen of the A80. I've read a lot of your posts, and realize you like the tilt feature, but is the size something you've gotten used to? Also is the 4mp satisfactory for cropping a bit? These three cameras are all within $50 of each other, although I do have stuff for the A20 (CF cards, etc.) that would transfer over to the A80. Thanks very much for your input here or email; and thank you for posting such inspirational pictures! I'm getting this mostly for our only grandson, age 3, but see there's a lot more out there - even around the house and garden. Appreciate your input...

Isabel Cutler08-May-2004 11:46
Good question, Vince. I found that of all the cameras I've had, the S400 required the LEAST sharpening when I sized them down. Picture quality is amazing. If they needed sharpening the original wasn't supersharp to begin with.
Isabel
Vince 08-May-2004 05:47
I have one more question for you, Isabel. How often do you sharpen pictures from the S400? Do you feel that most pictures from this camera need some sharpening? Thanks a lot.
Isabel Cutler08-May-2004 05:46
Thank you Vince. I usually resize to 800 x 600 or 600 x 800 (or similar sizes). After I resize down I usually use some sort of sharpening, since pictures lose some of that when you size down. I've been sharpening lately with the FocalBlade plug-in for Photoshop. My older pictures were saved to jpg quality 10 in either Photoshop or Elements, but lately I've lowered that to quality 9. Reason for the change is I was using up a heck of a lot of space on pBase!
Isabel
Vince 08-May-2004 04:58
Hi Isabel. I love your pictures. I'd like to ask you about how you save your pictures for posting here. What compression do you use and how do you decide what to resize them to? Thanks.

Aloha Isabel,
I am a retired chef, but I've also been a former professional photographer for over 18 years in Hawaii as a "stringer" for Time/Life and Sunset magazines in addition to many advertising accounts. I've used every format size camera and all types of film media during that incarnation. I finally decided to select digital as my photography medium and as luck would have it, I came upon your site while researching a choice between the Canon S400 or the newer A80.

Your photo galleries are totally inspiring....so much so that as a "former" photographer, I forgot my initial quest in finding a suitable digital camera and have been totally absorbed with your photographic expertise, quality and range of subject matter AND the very helpful comments/descriptions that accompany your offerings. Brava, Ms. Cutler and thank you so very much for your helpful, unselfish and inspirational work that you share. You have provided an educational and insightful course in digital photography to this new convert.
Aloha,
Stan Rivera

Hi isabel,

My name is gerald and I am a recent a-80 owner. I would like to thank you for the great photos you put up on pbase. When I saw what this camera could do in the hands of a pro, I knew which camera was for me. I often go to dp review to catch comments from other owners but for some reason my old computer setup will not allow me to post anything in the forum. I haven't owned a camera for over 10 years and would like to show people who are thinking of buying one, a pic I took of a drop exploding. I was wondering if I could send you the pic so that you may show it in the forum? My e-mail is geraldtardif466@hotmail.com

We have both. I prefer the A80. Depends on your needs and desires.
Isabel
Isabel Cutler14-Jan-2004 02:43
The picture quality is as good and in some cases better. The flash on the S400 is terrible...much better on the A80. Only downside of the A80 is the lcd. It has less resolution than that of the S400 and is darker in low light. Other than that it is a totally delightful and inconspicuous camera (doesn't draw attention like other cameras with great big long lenses)!
Get the A80. You won't be sorry!

Isabel

i was very glad to see your comment on dpreview.com.
i am in the process of buying a digi camera and not sure if the canon a80 is comparable to the canons400. the difference i can see now is the vario lcd and more manual options with the a80.
if the picture quality is the same i will buy the a80.
i heard very many good reviews on the s400 and in europe this s400 has won many many test, could you please give me some advice?? i would certainly appreciate it!!!

thanks a million

Isabel,
Many thanks for your warm words of welcome to my first posting on the Sony Forum. I will be visiting your galleries quite often to see how proper photography is done, and to pick up quiet pointers regarding all of the basics.......and as I improve...more advanced techniques. The body of work in your galleries is absolutely breathtaking. Thank you indeed Isabel for taking your time to even respond to my post. It is very much appreciated.

Best regards,

Isabel your site is great, and has inspired me to use digital photography. I would like to ask for some advice please... We bought the Canon A80, and have been taking pics on "High resolution", "superfine" setting.

when we transfer the pictures to the computer, they look fine if viewed zoomed in ie 1:1, but since there are +-2000 pixels, you only see a small part of the picture like this. If I try to resize it, so that you can see the whole picture, the picture seems to become fuzzy, with loss of clarity eg hair has silvery/glittery look about it. Looking at your photos at various sizes they still look very clear. What resolution and compression are you using? What programme do you use to resize or adjust your photos?
I would appreciate any advice you could offer me please.

Thank you
Regards
Sarah

Hi

Thanks for your posting on www.dpreview.com.

I am presently in the process of making a selection between the Canon S400 and Canon A80 Your posting on dpreview commenting on S400 and A80 got my attention.

Since you have used both these models, your input/suggestion will be very helpful in deciding on one or the other (Canon S400 or A80).

Thanks

He was tooo funny ... this is my friend's backyard and this little guy comes and eats right out of her hand ... before I took this picture he had come in and helped himself to some peanuts right out of the bag in the kitchen. Bold little guy. So I just sat on a chair by the table and waited ... when she tosses the peanuts on the metal table ... he hears it and comes running. It was an overcast day ... and I used the flash ... I think that made the tail seem brighter red. I can harly wait until it snows (now there is something different) ... she has deer come to the house this close once it snows. Michele

Isabel,

Thanks for the review of the Canon A80 on D Preview.

it really helped me narrow down my choices. I've been evaluing the A80 vs the Nikon Coolpix 4300.

I may now also consider the Canon S400 Elph.

By the way, I could almost swear one of your photos was of a Timberlake Hall table-looks quite a bit like our own.

Thanks

Hello Isabel
I came across your A80 comment on Dpreview and i'm curently in the process of choosing between the A80 and the S400. From what i've read and seen in you gallary you're probably the expert opinion i need to make the right choice.
I'm quiet an experience photographer but this would be my first digital camera. I will be using the camera on a 6 month backpacking trip to New Zealand and Australia, so size, wheight, batary life and most important image quality are the main factors.
I would apriciate your opinion very much.
your gallery is absolutly amazing.

Thank you in advance,

Elad

Bravo Isabel for these galleries, I admire your trees photographies.
Thanks a lot for the views and comparisons of the Canon A80. As many poeple, I hesitate a lot in the choice of my new digital camera.
A suggestion : would it be possible to have an overview of the differents qualities of the same photography from the highest (even if it takes some time to download it) to lower one (with full compression). The fact is when you have not the camera you can't imagine the quality of a 4Mpixel and the effects of the compression.
Best Regards
Olivier from Paris

Two different entities...The 717 is far superior to the A80...much faster lens (f2) and 5 mp plus 5X zoom. Usable ISO800 with the Sony. Cameras for different purposes. I have and love both.

On the top of what David asked below, I'd also like to hear your opinion on A80 vs 717. --John

Isabel, I'm just getting into digital photography and find your photos to be inspiring. Through your experience with both the Canon S400 and Canon's new A80, which one would you recommend for a newbie such as myself? I'm just stuck between the two and am looking to purchase one of them before my wedding/honeymoon next week (*GULP*). I will eventually upgrade to to 5+ megapixels but want something for the time being that'll help get my feet wet.

Keep up the great work!

Isabel, do you live in the Hendersonville/Asheville area. I am a recent retiree and moved here with my wife from Kansas. I am a photo enthusiast and was struck by your recent posting from Carl Sandburg's home. Love your pictures. I also post on PBase and would love to learn the great spots in this area to photograph. After seeing what came out of the Rebel today at Best Buy I have lost a bit of enthusiasm. I am pretty excited about he Pentax *ist judging from the images posted at dpreview...but will reserve judgment and further excitement until the thing is in lots of hands and I can read users experiences and see what they're doing with it...and how much money they have to put into it. Excited mostly about its small size as I have resisted getting a dslr because of weight and money.

Isabel,

Plan on buying some good lenses. I've compared the kit lens, 17-40, and the Sony F717 lens. The Sony and the 17-40 are very close between 28-40mm on the Canon lens. Adding the 0.7x converter to the Sony results in some softening, while the 17-40 remains sharp as a tack. The kit lens is a disaster.

I'm a pro photographer seeking digital paint artists that can transform my photos into painterly art. Different custom effects are sought. I can e-mail the digital photos to you and pay you for the finished work. I really enjoy your work!

What beautiful work! The cabin has to be in a class of its own, a Class well past excellence!. (I am partial to B&W), Actually I find your work to be outstanding, (if I knew of a better word, I would use it)and it gives a lot of motivation to me to get moving into the digital world.
I just purchased my 717 and Photo shop 7.0. I am doing adobes Classroom in a Book, while learning my 717 (a lot for an old man) I have been shooting for several years with the 35mm and have been wanting to get my feet wet,so I jumped in, and finding your website has is quite inspiring. I am afraid my Darkroom will be collecting Spiderwebs (if they can get in it). Thanks a lot for posting these fine works of art and giving us the opportunity to see them.-Roy

I love all of your work. You have inspired me with so many variations, I think I'll be busy for the next year or so. From sketches to BuZZ and if I get up the nerve, Painter 8.
Keep up the great work!

Hi I'm Gino from France.
Yesterday i finally bought a Sony DSC-F717 and upload my test shots on line here on that site. Just have a look on my fresh new F717 gallery please when you have some time.
I really like your NC gallery 'cause the light is terrific! Did you take these photos in Automatic mode? Personally i love setting the camera my self so i don't like the Auto Mode. So thanks again and bye Isa!

Thanks for signing my guestbook, Damien. I appreciate the kind words!
Photography has been my hobby for 50 years so I've done a lot of studying along the way...mostly on my own, reading books and taking a few courses. Of all the books I've read the Time-Life Library of Photography has been the most helpful. You can buy the books used through Amazon, abebooks.com or other mass marketers of used books. The Sony ebook by Peter iNova will teach you lots about photography in general. Don't be afraid to participate on the forums and start visiting the Retouching forum. It's a great place to learn! Just checked abebooks: http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookSearchPL

Isabel,

I stumbled upon your pictures from the link on dpreview.com and I have to say I absolutely love your photos. You have such great talent.

I was recently given a Sony DSC F-717 as a gift and am amazed and excited by the photos you took. Unfortunately I know nothing about photography. I know nothing about meters f stops and so forth. Do you have any advice on any books that would help? Or is the best way through classes?

Anyhow I loved your photos and I'm looking forward to learning so that I too can post on here.

Thanks again.

Damien

Hi Isabel,
I just went to an auction preview in Pennsylvania, where about a half dozen photos of yours (16 x 20" - 20 x 24" in size) are up for auction. They are very nice prints. I am hoping to win bids on 1 in particular - a view of a desert mountain with lots of fresh green vegetation in the foreground that takes up bottom 2/3 of frame. There are giant crop sprinklers on wheels in the photo too. The photos are signed on the matte. I was wondering if you might be able to tell me where the photo was made and the type of print it is. It's a beautiful print and magnificently composed. Was it made in Saudi Arabia? I just researched your name, to discover you have a book published, and that is how i wound up here in your guestbook. Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Michael A.

In all honesty while the Stroboflip does the job it feels quite awkward to me to hold. I like the fact that it is lightweight. I only use flash when absolutely necessary. I prefer available light whenver possible.

Isabel,
Thank you for all your information on the Stroboflip. I trust you are still pleased with it. I am using the Olympus bracket on my E20N which puts the flash on the side for portrait shots. I am looking at the Stroboflip and the Camera Flip to get the flash above the lens.
Thanks again,
Mark

Isabel,
Where did you buy your Swivel Shoe Adapter? Thank you.

Richard Clark 03-Jan-2003 04:23
Hi Isabel , I read your question in the sony forum in dp review . Vivitar makes a remote sensor cord for the 283 & also for the 285( called a vari sensor adapter). You just pull out the flash sensor on the front of the flash and the sensor plugs into the remote which slides onto the hotshoe on your sony. This lets the sensor remain at the lens level but the flash can be 2-3 feet from the camera. I purchased mine used from keh camera in Atlanta Ga.
hope this helps. rc
