Bird resembles a parrot in size yet has a bright green underbelly and the rest is a dark green or dark Greg or even black saw in southern ca (Lakewood) there appeared to be a flock of around 100. Can anyone identify this bird it would be much appreciated.

We are seeing a bright red and black bird here in the trees on golf course at Palm Desert. The females look like tiny finches with very little red on their breasts but the male is almost fluorescent red on head and breast with very black black back and markings.

I’m so happy you id’ed the red whiskered bulbul. They seem to love the San Marino Pasadena area ..The reason they are not in many of the popular birding books is they are a non native species brought over from Thailand and released..They are really cool birds with a wonderful song that I enjoy hearing ..So glad you enjoyed my gallery and that you found the id of the bulbul..

2016 June Thank you so much for your pic of the Red Whiskered Bulbul. I have been going crazy trying to identify this bird at the Huntington Gardens. My Bird aps did not have it at all, and I saw at least three up close with binoculars. I could not figure out why I couldn't id. It's a lovely bird, beautiful sound and not shy.

??mid day, May 22, SoCal brush and trees, two all Brown birds, on top at least, the size of a mocking bird, similar longish tail, too fast, flew up into brush and gone...so I couldn't see their chests. A migrating bird? didn't see it in the gallery, but may have missed it - thanks!

Can anyone help identify this bird? Black, with white chest and bright red under belly. The most unusual feature was the black conical shape protruding from the top of its head. Size - about that of a robin. This stunning ceature was seen in a lemon tree in Pasadena, CA, late March.

I live in Lancaster. We have birds all the time. They seem to love both the grassy (well, sort of, it is summer) front and dry back yards. Mostly we have sparrows and finches of various kinds hopping around the yard. They love to wallow in the dirt fluffing their wings. 10-20 at a time. The red ones and yellow ones are my granddaughter's faves. Esp the fluffy fat babies. Ring-necked doves graze in the grass then sit on the roof loudly cooing. That is when the ravens aren't around. They pile into the area on trash day. They know when it is somehow. They love to be high. They are big so they thump when they walk up there! They are smart. My least fave is the mockingbirds. Too aggressive. Saw one chase a cat down the street diving to peck it all the way! Rarely, I see a robin or a blue jay. Lots of pigeons (a few very pretty fancy ones). We had a nest in the tree but it's so windy here, one morning we found 2-3 broken eggs on the ground under the nest. Too bad.

Meant to say many hawks not "may" hawks. Sorry. I seem to have hawk radar as I see them all over the place. In trees, on top of street lights and electric poles, flying in the sky. Pulled into the driveway in Antelope Valley and a gorgeous big hawk was having a pigeon for lunch next to the garage. Didn't seem to be bothered by us. Kept eating while I ran in and got the video camera. Got some great video. Stayed there about 30 minutes til nothing much was left then finally flew off when it heard a bunch of ravens making a racket as they landed a few houses away. They are so strong and stocky. Saw one by LAX, cruising above a field, suddenly folded up and dived on something. They are like little rockets. Like a blur when diving! Sorry so long but these animals are so exciting.

Love the photos. Have been a fan since I got a gift of a bird i.d. book in 4th grade. I've seen egrets in SOCA in the wetlands around Marina del Rey and Tillman WRP. Gorgeous and elegant. Saw some close up in FL. In Palos Verdes I had 2 feeders because I saw so many hummers around. I had them there in multiples all the time. They are friendly things. I've had them come up within a few inches of my face so many times. Once I was hanging a refill and one flew up next to me, I said, give me a minute and it waited until I hung the feeder then went in to drink. LOL They are very territorial though. Had a mother with 2 babies who attacked others. They would fly so fast and then hit with a loud thud. I was afraid they'd get hurt but didn't seem to. I had 5 there at once. My biggest love is the may hawks. They loved to soar in the winds of the canyons at PV so I watched them often. Best sighting was a mom and 3 babies soaring about 3' above me then off to the ocean where they played for about 30 min. Breath taking!! All I got was some blurry photos though.

one year the sparrow's had vanished which i thought was strange but they returned ..i would doubt anyone would be that cruel to use poison they have probably found another hangout or they have migrated else where ..

I've been feeding and watering all the wild birds here in So Cal in a canyon i live in near Loma Linda, i've been doing this for 3 years, and of course i have hummingbird feeders, i love to wake up to see and listen to them all, and i've noticed if i run out of food for just a day, alot of them sit on my deck, as if to tell me Dinner Time, as well as squirrels, rabbits, i love my DOVES, i have so many that come here, however i noticed in past years, they seem to be shy, but mine are here all the time, and NO YOU CAN'T COME HUNT DOVES ON MY PROPERTY...just saying, some people have seen how many i get and have asked to hunt...i dont think so lol ....Lloyd, i can't tell you how much knowledge and joy i got looking at all your pictures, our Hawks here are everywhere, and if you've ever been in my area, watch for the wild BURRO's , they also are at my place everyday, hanging out with my horse and drinking any water they can get...my question is on the Orioles, don't they have special feeders for Orioles? anyway kudos to all your photos...BEAUTIFUL Carrie

Thanks for the suggestion. Sometimes 5 or 6 young hummingbirds will share a feeder and feed together (perhaps they are from the same nest?) but other times one larger humming bird defends a feeder.

humming birds are very territorial they will fight for control of the feeders ..so keep the feeders spread out where the feeders are out of sight of each other I was in arizona at a wild life reserve near springer ville they had about 4 feeders in pairs spread out over a large yard ..there was not a problem there the birds seem to all get along

I have planted my back yard with native plants and have a small fountain and three hummingbird feeders and lots of tall trees bordering the yard. I have about 30 humming birds that hang out and I think nest in the yard...about 3 varieties. I have to fill the feeders daily (about 6 cups of sugar water every day or so). I rather think that if I put up more feeders, I'll have more humming birds but I wonder if there can be too much of a good thing? Might I over populate the yard to the detriment of the birds?

the fun part of living is waking early and looking to see if there's any exotic visters to my pond or hummer feeder ...of course i always enjoy the mockingbird family that has taken over my backyard I have a pair of black phobes that swoop down to my pond at feeding to eat the koi food and there is the hummingbirds who have befriended me ..there colorful beauty is unmatched in nature..we have lots of sparrows and house finches who melodic song always amazes me

I noticed the other day that our GOLF COARSE bird has a very long head feather. It was near a couple of others, searching for food, when it turned its head and the feather could be seen. Rather long, head down to about the mid wing.

We have a new bird that has been showing up at our golf course. It looks like a Chucker, but walks with its back very straight up. Not sure if searching for grubs. Maybe 12-16 inches tall and very erect.

It had grey feathers on his back and wings and some red spots on its head. In terms of size, its head was smaller than my thumb and made up about half of it's body. It seems like another guest saw the same bird in December 2010 but I can't seem to ID it anywhere.. just thought I'd ask. I hope you can help me identify a small songbird I have seen in my backyard lately. It is small like a finch, mostly black with some white, and his tail feathers must be at least 6" long! It has a very unusual way of flying because of his long tail feathers. I live in the city of Orange.

I feed wild quail and have a shallow ground water for them. It has resulted in many new birds and others visiting. I recently have been seeing a fat little bird shaped like a sparrow but larger and fatter. It is marked on top like a sparrow but the breast is a beautiful large speckles of black on white feathers. Short beak like a starling. Any ideas? Also, how can I add pics to your site? I am in Campo California

I live near Escondido and feed grape jelly to the pair of Hooded Orioles that come around a few times a day! I just put it out on a little plate on a table in the vegetable garden and they love it.

I live in South Torrance, and just now (early dusk) I saw the coolest bright yellow bird eating from our peach tree....not really sure if he was enjoying the fruit, or bugs there? I've seen lots of tanagers and warblers, but this guy was big, like a blue jay or mockingbird. I only remember seeing black on his under belly, or maybe it was his tail? As soon as I made a noise, he flew away. I never knew we had orioles in So. Cal! :)

thanks for being the only person to identify the weird bird I saw at the park today. The bird was hanging out by the man made lake just watching the ducks. and the turtles. The red eyes were so unique, and the way the bird just sat there , so still and quiet was amazing to watch. Thanks to your beautiful pictures I identified it as night heron.

the 2 hooded oriole's I saw were working their nest at the rest stop this side of camp pendleton.. I was thrilled when I spotted their nest about 20 feet up in a tree ..I have shots of the nest ..when i found the nest it made things so easy for me and my sigma 150-500 lens..The male hooded oriole is such a beautiful bird he stands out in the trees and ground searching for insects with his bright yellow and black color making him an easy site to behold..Thanks for sharing your thoughts...

I live in Thousand Oaks, Ca and am so delighted to have a pair of nesting Red-tailed hawks on my property. Babies should be born any minute. Too fabulous. Just bought a Fuji 30X optical zoom in hopes of getting better pics than last years. Last year, the babies spent a fair amount of time walking around on my flat room....in between short flights. How great is that!!!!

sounds like a good plan Craig we'll set it up for for a date some time soon...I'm so glad that everyone enjoys my bird gallery ...I won't rest until I shoot every species of bird in the california arena....It's a thrill I just return from concord ca.for a couple of weeks to find ..I hope a nesting pair of townsends warblers in the conifer across the street ..I'm going to post my best shot.. ALSO i spotted some yellowhead blackbirds off interstate five near hiway 119.. didn't have time to stop but

Lloyd, your pics are great! I live in Carbon Canyon, in Chino Hills... so a lot of these birds are my neighbors. As you can probably imagine, there are a LOT of birds out here! Thanks so much for your wonderful photos! I just moved to San Diego from Hawaii and am enjoying the birds in the large pine tree right outside my apartment window. There is a very small bird, most yellow breasted with a red patch on the top of his head. Some greyish feathers on his back. Does anyone know what this is? Hi! I love the photos. I also saw the same type of bird that I can't identify that was like the one mentioned below--like a towhee with an orange back by the tail, but not on the tail.

Love the site. I was looking for a particular bird I saw today in my yard in Yorba Linda, CA. It was brown like a toehee, but had a bright orange upper tail feathers by its back, cannot figure out what it is...Does anyone know?

I just wanted to thank you for the pictures of the birds. they are so clear,i found the ones that are in my back yard,they are the cute little sparrows with stripes on there heads and the finches,they just showed up today,they were yellow on the breast and black wings and head. thank you very much for helping me identify them.

I live in Torrance, CA, and our songbirds have been almost obliterated by the huge Raven population. But in the winter months, some different birds appear, but don't linger long. There is one bird that came this winter and is still frequenting our backyard daily, sometimes one visit, sometimes two. To date, I have not been able to identify him. I believe it's a male because it is changing markings now that it's warming up. His upper body is dark gray, sleek, some white markings on wings & tail, now turning from white to yellow under throat and some yellow other places. He flies low over the grass and catches bugs, sometimes sits on the fence and then darts to catch a flying insect. I have searched the bird books I have, and the nearest I've seen is black phoebe, but it has no yellow. The gnatcatchers are too shabby looking to be him. I don't have a good camera to take a picture. I wonder if anyone has seen a similar bird?

I have been searching the internet for pictures of birds of Southern Calfiornia so that I can identify the birds in my back yard and on the side slope. Yours is the best that I have found so far; I have been able to identify 3 of the 11 different birds that I have been watching for days. A pair of ???? seem to live in the brush up the slope. They have brownish body feathers and black lines on their crown, like a war-painted Cheyenne warrior. They are often visited by another pair of look alikes, but with a rust brown colored head. Also a flock of yellow breasted something or other numbering 25 to 30 birds come and feast on the flower buds of the brush. There is one lone bird that has a black head from crown to neck, and the body feathers are orange and black; this bird is as big as a raven or crow. There is also a pair of mockingbirds, lots of hummingbirds, and a couple of squaking crows, and what looks like a black phoebe. As far as other wild life, what I thought was the biggest squirrel that I have ever seen, from your pictures, looks more like a member of the chipmonk family. That's it for now.

Has anyone else encountered a hummingbird that .... er ....fell in love with another species of bird. The other bird tolerated it but looked annoyed. The hummingbird followed and er... other things for a couple of weeks?

love looking at the pictures. helps me identify some visitors who come to feast on the several feeding stations along side our home. I am suprised at the many birds other than hummingbirds who enjoy the nector we provide and the friendly scrub jays who ask for more peanuts if they see us outside. thanks again...Mona

Thanks so much for your great photos. It really helps me figure out which birds I have around my little area here. It really takes a while to diffrentiate between some birds due to similarities. Your photos are settings & that helps judge size & markings.

June 3, 2006 I am nursing an injured bird, and thanks to you, found out it is a black phoebe. Thanks for your lovely pictures and I will probably refer to them again, as I carry a little cage in my trunk in case a little feathered friend may need my services! I see some I have cared for in the past. Much gratitude from a bird lover of many, many years.
