Alligator "gaping". They frequently do this when resting in the sun. It may be a way to help cool themselves as they do not sweat. However, they have also been seen doing it in the rain and at night, so the "experts" think it may also have a social function as well.

I just think it makes for a great photo, as long as you don't get too close!
