Playing by the rules

In a recent camera club competition the judge dismissed one of my sheep pictures because there were four sheep.
He said that the rules of photography state that three or any other odd number work best and always avoid even numbers.
He even suggested that my picture could have been highly commended or even a prize winner If I'd photoshopped one of the sheep out!
I said b*llocks.
This one is for those who believe such rubbish, I just can't be bothered with people who only go by "rules".

Great image but there are 6 ears and eyes: dismissed (lol)

A fine image of sheep following the rules.

Rubbish! That's why I don't join camera clubs. This is lovely image.

Who wants rules eh... but this is a great shot John!
marie-jose wolff29-Feb-2016 09:28
very nice trio! V

By that rule your many photographs of twin lambs would also have been rejected - what twaddle!
It's a great image John but they are obviously waiting for numbers 4,5 and 6 to join them for the shoot!

Rules are made to be broken! Please continue to be a rebel John!!!!

Great sheep shot, judges have to have something to say, even if it is crap.
laine28-Feb-2016 20:26
oh and I bet the judge doesn't know that !!! :))
laine28-Feb-2016 20:24
I wont add as it's all been said...I take no part in competitions, judgement is only one man's opinion but doesn't mean it's correct!! Its a lovely shot and the background is special...right beside that sheep's ear on the right, I reckon there is a sign that says "Hill End" ;)
globalgadabout28-Feb-2016 19:42
perhaps the judge has simply misunderstood the Rule of Thirds..

Lovely sheep shot, would look even better with four in it :-)
Marisa Livet28-Feb-2016 18:50
I fully agree with you. I'd add other thee sheep here right now, so they would be six and every rule would be upset, but we'd enjoy a lovely photo!

they're watching ewe

Load of cobblers. A good photographer knows the rules of composition; a superb photographer knows there are no rules. :-)

Thats why I don't bother with these clubs with antiquated rules.
I hope they don't show any wedding shots of the Bride & Groom in the club, they would have to be rejected as a couple! or maybe they agree with bigamy......

Rules are made to be broken. Photo clubs and competitions - no.

The head of Architecture at Plymouth school in 1958 went on about this within a background of gestalt psychology, so I had already rebelled long before touching a camera (unless it was the box brownie). This is probably still 'wrong' as no sheep is the dominant one!! To me the whole point of animal photography is to observe animal behaviour and I have never observed sheep counting
