Una Ballena en la Playa de la Concha

view map

A whale at the beach of La Concha
A 16.6 metre-long whale died in San Sebastian after being washed up on La Concha beach.
Members of Ambar, a marine life protection organization, arrived at the scene to try to save the beached razorback whale but the it died that night.
Newspaper Diario Vasco reported it weighed between 8 to 10 tonnes - half of what it should normally weigh, indicating the whale was ill.
The news of a beached whale in the bay of the Basque city of San Sebastian attracted many people who looked on in astonishment as attempts were made to rescue the animal.
Razorback whales are also known as fin whales and are the second largest living mammals in the world.
They are classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as an endangered species.

A wonderful animal...such a shame it could not be saved. It does seem to be happening quite frequently all over the globe these days, unfortunately.

Something you will always remember, being witness to such an event. I would guess that most of the time when the death of this great sea mammal occurs the sharks get it. But it is still sad in a way.

What an honor to experience such a close encounter with such a n incredile beast, what a pity it was not alive. Nature works in mysterious ways.
