Aitona (Segrià)

Aitona lies to the west of the Segrià region, along the middle course of the Lower Segre. Its economy is based on fruit farming and the industrial use made of the complex of canals, reservoirs, and the Utxesa-Seròs hydroelectric power station. Although an intersection for much road communication in former times, the region has an archaeological heritage that is little known. In the town centre, you can visit the Parish Church of Sant Antolí, dating back to the 18th century, with its Baroque façade, the House of El Pare Palau, the House of Santa Teresa Jornet, the ruins of the ancient Islamic castle or Castell del Moro, of which a walled precinct and two conical towers still stand, and the curious quarter of La Moreria and the Carrer de la Sinagoga, with their characteristic streets with pointed arches, where Moorish documents have been discovered. The locality contains the ruins of the Castle of Carratalà, of Islamic origin, the abovementioned archaeological sites (Montefiu, Genó...), the Cave of El Pare Palau and the Church of Sant Joan de Carratalà, in the Romanesque style, almost certainly built over a former mosque and attributed to the Knights Hospitalers.
