The underground tunnels of the modernist Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Carrer Sant Antoni Maria Claret 167) have reopened. The structure designed by architect Lluís Domčnech i Montaner, since 1997 on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, covers nine blocks in the Eixample district and consists of a main building and 27 pavilions. It is the largest modernist building in the world. Underground tunnels connect the various wards. It was intended that all possible services would be offered at the hospital and outside the individual buildings, including a church, a convent and a water tank, avenues and gardens were landscaped. With this aim, the hospital complex seems more like a park or open-air museum.
