Built at the end of the 13th century in accordance with Gothic norms, it was restored at the end of the 19th century, which is why today it has the appearance of a French-style castle and not a Gothic one. The castle museum is located in a neighbouring building and the Convent del Carmen includes the Museu del Vidre glass museum, the Museu del Vi wine museum and the library.Peralada Castle lies outside the town, a little to the south beside the Carme convent. Built at the end of the 13th century following Gothic principles, it was the residence of the Viscounts of Rocabertí and the Counts of Peralada.It was renovated at the end of the 19th century, which explains why the castle is now in French style rather than Gothic. Each summer it hosts the Peralada International Music Festival.The Castle Museum, is housed in a neighbouring Gothic building, Carme convent (14th century), with a cloister and church, the outstanding feature of which is the polychrome wood.
